Let's say Trump decides to go full gangster and plant his ass in Mar-a-Lago and say "COME GET ME."
IF DeSantis approves an extradition order, he becomes the enemy of Trump's base, which means "bye bye 2024."
IF he backs TRUMP, DeSantis could face criminal charges, because refusal to authorize an extradition order would be dereliction of duty in his role as Governor of Florida.
IF this is being whispered, it's also made it to Trump's ear. If he wanted to take DeSantis out of the equation, this would certainly be one way to do it.

(18,837 posts)And I say that as someone who does not believe Trump has ANY "charm."
He DOES have a way to cast a spell, to make people believe his nonsense, to believe the TV character created by Mark Burnett for The Apprentice is actually who he is in real life, DESPITE his SIX bankruptcies.
DeSantis is basically a humorless authoritarian, but in terms of negative character traits, he IS Trump.

(22,035 posts)You wrote that if DeSantis refuses to authorize and extradition order would be a criminal offense. Are you sure? It would seem to be a States Rights issue that would require review in a Federal Court.
Dereliction of duty sounds like an impeachment issue to be considered by the Florida legislature rather than a prosecutor.
Could you explain a little more, please?
It's a great idea, though!

(9,888 posts)myself. If not signing an extradition order is a crime, what is the point of an extradition order?
Miles Archer
(18,837 posts)1). It would be dereliction of duty. His role is pretty unambiguous. He is required to sign the extradition order.
2). It would be obstruction of justice. That would be the potential criminal charge. If Trump is indicted and the sticking point is DeSantis and DeSantis goes "nope," he's obstructing justice.

(17,536 posts)He will go where his lawyers tell him to go, and do what they tell him to do. Because delay is his superpower, he will not go to trial before the next election, and he is counting on winning the election to avoid justice. His options are few.
However, the thought of Trump being dragged, kicking and screaming, out of a hidey-hole, in the basement of Mar-a-loco, just like Saddam, brings a smile to my face.

(18,837 posts)He's carefully and consistently painted himself as a martyr, and leaned into the MAGAts' paranoia by saying "They're really not after me...THEY'RE AFTER YOU," so if and when he is indicted...and arrested...Trump will blow the "You're NEXT" dog whistle.

(11,631 posts)It would permanently cement him as part of the deep state and ruin any chance he has of capturing the maga base. Not that he isnt rooting for the courts to destroy Trump harder than anyone but no way he participates.

(58,785 posts)There's no corner for this one to be backed into; he'll make whatever statement benefits himself the most.
And tRump's attorneys have already said tRump will cooperate and present himself to NYC, and if so there will be no need for federal marshals to come get him.
I think he will. This is the least dangerous to him, with the lowest penalties, of all the current investigations, and some believe holds the highest risk of criminal prosecution failing to achieve a guilty verdict.

(13,493 posts)Just finish trump. Be done with him. Extradite him. DONEZO. People will calm down by the fall. And if he's indicted in GA and Federally, people will forget all about the NY charges.

(43,181 posts)And I think DeSantis isn't prepared for the shockwaves that will follow the indictment of the last Republican President.
To all non-Republicans, moderates, independents, etc., the Republican Party is going to have a stink or a taint on it from Trump that will be damn near impossible to remove. And any nominee emerging from that morass is going to be forced to deal with that stink, whether it's DeSantis or somebody else.
