I was reading this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=post&forum=1002&pid=1773789 about one of our DUers who was offered a sandwich and water as he is cleaning up from Sandy. Some of our DU friends are probably dealing with some real hardships right now.
Remember back when we did the DU hearts and everyone was able to give each other hearts as a fundraiser? Can we do something like that for Sandy? Maybe Wish-a-doo could help figure it out? (onegrassroots! where are ya?!)
We donated waaaay to much to politics this year and Christmas is coming up...but I hate the idea that our DU freinds might really be hurting. I'd only be able to do a few bucks but my few bucks and your few bucks, and a dollar from that other guy over there, would add up.
Anybody else think a fundraiser for our friends might be do-able? If not for our DU friends then maybe Sandy Relief in general?
I WILL PLEDGE THE FIRST FIVE BUCKS :0)
We could give each other little Obama O's. (or something like that)?w=780
REC if you'd participate. Skinner will know there is interest. :0) AND HAPPY WEEKEND PEEPS!

(53,661 posts)Although I believe the Admins are still busy bees as we are still going in and out of Level 1 and Level 2 high traffic, they might not be able to install that soon.
In the meantime there are Red Cross donations, my kid wants me to give a ride to COSTCO to see if they're taking donations as they did with the Japanese tsunami disaster.

so far I like Trader Joe's best

(4,359 posts)Even if it was to do a donation from DU to the red cross, I'd be cool with that.

(53,661 posts)So let's just continue with ideas. We have some truly generous and wise folks here and I know they want to help.
We help first by electing people that care enough to enact the policies to help the people we'll never meet, but we're willing to make one on one help as well.
It's all good. United we stand, divided we fall.

(4,359 posts)So, really it is their idea, just a new circumstance.

(28,979 posts)We had a Mardi Gras mask auction. DUers donated items, others bid on them and we all had a terrific time and raised a few thousand dollars for a good cause.
Maybe we could auction off old election memorabilia. That would be fun. I would donate for sure.

(4,359 posts)i've seen those charity auctions on ebay before--
auctioning off an item would be fun....i'd figure out something to donate.

(28,979 posts)And we pinned the thread to the top for a week, I think. People posted their items. Bidding commenced in response. The monies were paypaled to Skinner. And we mailed off the items to the high bidder. We helped some fellow DUers who lost everything. It was a small but heartwarming way to contribute and have fun the same time. We had masks and because everyone made them, it was extra fun.
I lost all my bookmarks in DU2, so I can't provide a link. Sorry.

(885 posts)to the Red Cross at my work. They encouraged employees to donate by letting those who donated dress down for the week in jeans and t-shirts.
Would be willing to donate through DU as well.
DonRedwood
(4,359 posts)Though...do you all look down on the peeps who didn't donate?
LP2K12
(885 posts)They do different dress-down donation weeks throughout the year. Breast cancer research, etc. This just happened to be the Sandy disaster. They also give them the option of donating blood for the disaster and still having the dress down option. So there are options for those who may not have the funds to donate.

(4,359 posts)we're about to do a food drive at work...but that's the extent of our workplace giving. They wouldn't even do that if I didn't do it.

(4,359 posts)but it makes me an awesome advocate because I'm not afraid to stand my ground regardless of the trouble it causes. My boss loves me but tells me she's scared to death for me sometimes.
grrrrr! bring it on!! (see, not so sweet now, eh?!)
