Another police to the wrong address killing

New Mexico, police showing up at the wrong house gun down homeowner. How does this happen? Odd numbers, even numbers on street address.

Police in Farmington, New Mexico, fatally shot a man Wednesday night after approaching the wrong home during a domestic violence call, in an incident that the police chief called "unbelievably tragic."

The deadly incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after Farmington police officers responded to the call in the city of around 46,000 in the northwestern part of the state, officials said.

“Once on scene, officers mistakenly approached” New Mexico State Police, which is investigating the shooting, said in a statement.

The homeowner of the incorrect residence, Robert Dotson, 52, eventually opened the door holding a handgun, state police said, and was fatally shot.

1. It doesn't say if the man was aiming the gun at the police or just holding it.

It makes a big difference. It seems like the couple were expecting some kind of trouble if they were both armed.

Either way it is a shame that he was killed.

Come to the door armed when they here some kind of disturbance. Just having a gun or if the police think you might have a gun seems to be reason enough to shoot.

Most normal people would not react the way they did.

That he would bring a gun to the door it doesn't make any sense. It sounds to me like the police didn't make it clear they were the police

Earlier that day 2 men were found murdered at the auto salvage yard the deceased worked at. Which poses the question of whether he was scared of somebody coming for him too or he was expecting police.

Particularly if he feared he might be the next target. It would explain why he answered the door with a gun and that his wife was also prepared to shoot it out.

But unless he had it aimed toward them when he opened the door, the police had no reason to immediately shoot.
