I missed this, it was back in February, but a judge tossed the disbarment proceedings against Sidney Powell. Although I found this thread on DU from back them which implies this was basically done on purpose (the bar sabotaged their own case, and put it in front of a drumpf judge).

CNN article on the same topic:

A Texas judge on Thursday dismissed the petition brought by State Bar of Texas Commission for Lawyer Discipline alleging that attorney Sidney Powell had violated legal ethics rules with her work on former President Donald Trumps 2020 election reversal gambits.
Judge Andrea Bouressa, who presides in Texas 471st District Court, said the commission had not met its burden in proving that Powell had run afoul of Texas attorney code of conduct. The judge also knocked the commission for not properly labeling its exhibits in its filing, leading her to only consider two of the exhibits the commission had filed.
It is possible that the dismissal order could be appealed, but a spokesperson for the disciplinary commission declined to comment. The attorney who represented Powell in the disciplinary proceedings did not respond to CNNs inquiry.
The disciplinary proceedings for the ex-Trump attorney unfolded in state court in Texas, where she is licensed, after a March 1 petition from the Texas Bars disciplinary commission asked the court to find her in violation of the professional code for attorneys in the state.

Absolutely disgusting that you can use your position as an attorney to help lay the groundwork for a coup, and not only are you not in prison, you didn't even lose your law license. If she were trying to sell loose cigarettes on the street, she'd be dead.

(3,617 posts)As a (former) Federal Judiciary Employee, I would like to put forward that Yes, there are some bad judges. Generally appointed by Republicans.
BUT
My own experience working with Article III Judges, is that I do still have faith in the Federal Judiciary. (and I'm as Liberal/Progressive as they come - but no one at work knew that because discussion of Politics was strictly forbidden).
So much so, that I could not contribute to a partisan campaign, or have partisan signs on my lawn/bumper. I wouldn't even 'Like' certain things on facebook while I worked there, lest I would get into trouble (and I know that people at the court had looked at my facebook page, even though I was not 'friends' with anyone from work there, and my facebook was not set to public).
I was involved in the presentations given to them at the "New Judges Orientation", where one of the main topics that was always presented (and was very serious) was the Canons and Ethics that all Federal Judiciary Employees must abide by, (and we all took the Oath to Uphold the Constitution upon starting our public service).
Fortunately, All Federal Judges MUST abide by certain Canons and Ethics. If these are violated, then the Judicial Council would investigate and take (any) appropriate action.
This question always came up: Does the Supreme Court have similar Ethics? And it blew my mind that no. There were none. No one above them to enforce any breach. For Eleven years now, congress has been asking the SC to do something about this. Roberts Refused.
In all the 21 years that I was there, there were 2 different scandals that I was aware of. Neither had anything to do with court cases.
And this is how I think it is unfair: Before both investigations were completed, the Judges in these 2 separate matters retired. And that was the end of it. No more investigation.
Interestingly, Sidney Powell was a Guest of one of these 2 at one or more of the annual Judicial Conferences.
But I have to say that I do have a very high respect for (Most) of the hundreds of Judges that I met or worked with over the years. I never heard any political conversations whatsoever (and I had lots of opportunities).
And for that, I am glad. Justice should be Blind to Politics. That is why what Thomas' wife is doing is so abhorrent.
The Supreme Court however..... it simply has no ethics laid out that they have to abide by. Those 9 people are Truly 'above the law'. This must change. I am very happy to hear that Dick Durbin is asking Roberts to do something about this lack of ethics.
I'm just asking that before painting with a very broad brush that the entire federal judiciary is corrupt.... to think of what this country would be like without the courts. I know it is unbalance now (thanks to Mitch McConnell and Republicans playing dirty), but I don't think the solution is for Democrats to play dirty. Play smart. With Honor, Integrity. Rule of Law is what binds this country together. Most Judges take their Public Service very very seriously. With Integrity and Honor. I may not like every ruling that comes down, but we should all respect the process and uphold the Constitution. Without it, we could be Sudan.
