Biden names Whitmer as reelection campaign co-chair

Alongside his Tuesday announcement that he will be running for reelection, President Biden also named Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as one of his national reelection campaign co-chairs.

Whitmer is the only governor on the panel. She joins U.S. Reps. Lisa Blunt-Rochester (D-Del.), Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Veronica Escobar (D-Texas);U.S. Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.); and media mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg as Biden’s picks for initial campaign leadership.

“To win this fight, we need strong leadership that can build and expand our broad, diverse coalition from 2020,” Biden said in a statement. “With this team leading the charge, we’ll be able to do just that. … Our campaign co-chairs are hardworking public servants that have dedicated their lives to making Americans’ lives better. I’ve been able to count on each and every one of them throughout my career, especially in the most challenging moments.

“Together, this team brings the expertise, leadership, and work ethic required to win this election and finish the job for the American people.”

In a quote tweet of Biden’s announcement video, Whitmer echoed his call to continue standing up to “dangerous extremists” by reelecting Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

He has more than 50 years of good will and can call on anyone and anything he needs. His PR operation has always to my ear occupied the sane, common sense, American political middle. 'The best ideas' he has told us. No kidding.

In this age of toxic populism where too many political leaders fuel anger, hated, division, and rage to further their own political ambitions, Joe Biden offerer a very different and far-more progressive path forward.

He is the person we need in this dark moment.

Gretchen Whitmer is a great addition to an extremely solid team.

Gretchen Whitmer Is an excellent choice as co-chair of President Biden’s campaign. The choice in 2024 is a stark but simple one: Biden vs barbarism
