But I blame us, not them. They need to see how politics affects them and it is up to us to show them.

(2,962 posts)It is up to them to grow up and act like adults.
2016 all over again.
I don't need an abortion or birth control.
They need it .

(1,920 posts)I try to convince younger people that they need to at least vote, but they just don’t seem to see the relevance. I don’t get it.

(39,537 posts)because it seemed to me that all there ever was in government was balding, overweight white men. Nuthin' to get too excited about.
But then Bill Clinton came along and I turned into a follower of politics.
However, I do recall when I was a kid I was always reading about social justice issues and in particular Clarence Darrow and Eugene Debs. I was fascinated by unions and union law. JFK also was of great interest.
Then when it came time to go to college, I was radical enough that I only wanted to go to Berkeley. Parents didn't want to foot the bill for out of state tuition, so I went to the state university and became an environmentalist and women's rights advocate.
So maybe this generation doesn't see anyone who represents them in government. That's essentially why I didn't vote.
I really liked how the republicans gave the two Justins a national identity. I thought this might galvanize some younger voters.

This boomer will be voting straight D as usual.
Some Gen Z will be Republican.
Like Kyle Rittenhouse.

(2,962 posts)There are Kyle Rittenhouses in your generation..
Remember Charlottesville.
Stop the ageism.
I grew up in the civil rights movement and women rights movement..
I have never voted Republican.
But a lot of millennials didn't vote for Hillary Clinton.
And now we know the history.
2024 maybe a repeat because younger voters can't see the bigger picture.
A lot Gen Z and millennials may not for President Biden.
There are two people now making noises and may draw away your votes .
I am hoping for the best but see another 2016.
Just remember Roe should still be here but it isn't..

I see you frequently criticizing the younger generations. My point is that the problem is not with the younger folks -- it is with the generations of those of us who are over 50. Of course these are generalizations, and not everyone who is a Gen Z or Millennial is progressive and not all Gen X, Boomers, Silents are conservative -- that should go without saying. However, when you speak in generalities, the younger demographic is much more liberal and they are staying liberal as they age, unlike our older generations.
"Just remember Roe should still be here but it isn't.." Yeah, and why is that? Because of older white people voting for Trump. Not because of Gen Z or Millennials.
Gen Z and Millenials saved our asses in the last three national elections. If it weren't for them, we'd be in the second Trump term. Something like 60 percent of the under-30s voted for Biden. They deserve your thanks, not your derision, and you should stop your ageism against the younger-than-Gen-X generations.
BTW, my particular sub-demo, people born in the mid-1960s, is a particularly odious voting bloc (again, in general, exceptions, such as myself, abound, blah blah). We came of age when Reagan got elected and somehow his poison got injected into many of our ilk. But I admit this sad reality; I'm not defensive about it.

(2,962 posts)The boomer generation is all not conservative like you guys like to paint us
Younger people are not all liberal.
Many of them come from right wing families.
I know I have younger families members who are Oath Keepers. They have kids who are not going to be to liberal s
They are the Hitler Youth people.
They belong to big fundamentalist type churches.
They have big families.
Gen Z is a not a pure generation.
Just take off the halos off this generation.
Recently my Aunt died and I went to the funeral with two cousins, all of us Democrats.
The rest were younger and all Republican.
Even the Z's
My cousins and I didn't stay long.
Talking about creepy right wingers.
Most of the men were packing guns and didn't try to hide it .
There are a lot of them
They home school and or send the kids to private church schools .
These people are not your friends.
Youth does not mean being liberal, hate to break your bubble.
I truly hope 2024 works out, I won't surprise if it doesn't.
Right now there are two pretend Democrats making noise right now , younger then Biden.
These two will say all the right things.
And younger folks will be sucked in .
Younger folks tend to vote on emotion.
They don't have enough years to understand.
There will be many first time voters.
To many of them will depend on TikTok to tell them how to vote .
I have already seen a lot anti Biden he is to old to run from
the younger voters.
No I don't have a lot of faith in them.
Sky Jewels
(8,990 posts)that OF COURSE there are exceptions?
I can see that your prejudice against younger people has hardened and you have made up your mind that Boomers=Good / Young People=Bad. So I will not try to discuss it with you anymore.

(28,835 posts)The GOP votes in lock-step. At this point in time, all a third party is likely to do is siphon votes from Dems, leading to GOP wins.
Jill Stein ring a bell?

(10,777 posts)I hear this bullshit all the time about how we need a third party. For what, exactly?
To do everything the Democrats want to do while, somehow, magically not raising your taxes?
To do everything the Democrats want to do, yet, somehow, "treating" white people better?
To be even more liberal than the Democrats, while magically winning some votes from the 47% of the country that thinks we are already trying to go too far?
What do you think that hypothetical third party should do differently?
