Farewell Meatball Ron, we hardly knew ye. As of this writing, it is 555 days until the 2024 presidential election. The Republican primaries have yet to even begin and Ron DeSantis’ campaign to be Der Führer of America instead of just the Sunshine State appears to be sinking faster than the Florida coastline. Looks like we’re going to get Trump vs. Biden, Round Two. The horserace press is riddled with angst over the prospect. I, on the other hand, plan to soak up their suffering like a sponge, the rat bastards.

What happened to Ron?

Well, let’s not pretend Ron DeSantis was ever a leading contender. An outlier poll or two had him within single digits of Trump. A few even had him ahead! But the overwhelming majority of polls had Trump crushing DeSantis like an empty beer can at a Brett Kavanaugh frat party. So what happened? Still, the press has been obsessively covering DeSantis for months. To be fair, there’s a lot to cover. DeSantis has turned Florida into his own personal magic fascist kingdom. His abuse of power is the stuff Republicans dream of. Rigged elections. Terrorizing minority communities. Open war on the press. Passing laws to hide government activity from public scrutiny. Passing even more laws to punish corporations that do not obey him. This is straight-up banana republic shit.

But in a state famous for its sweet oranges, Ron DeSantis ironically turned out to be a presidential lemon. As I’ve mentioned more than once, DeSantis has the personality of a dead fish. There’s a joke going around, allegedly attributed to a fellow Republican, that the only people who like Ron DeSantis haven’t met him yet. With a track record like his, you would think being likable in person is not super important. But you would be wrong. To succeed in Republican politics, you either need the mob or the machine. If you have the machine, you can usually get the mob to fall in line. Usually. Trump showed that if you have the mob, you can flip that dynamic and bend the machine to your will. Still, you need one or the other. DeSantis has neither. CBS News explains:



In other words, DeSantis is a dick and no one likes him. That means no machine to back him up. Bernie Sanders ran into this problem in 2016. Oh? Did you think it was all about the DNC coronating Hillary? Weird how that didn’t happen in 2008 when some unknown Senator came out of nowhere and got himself nominated over the supposed Chosen One. What was his name? O-something? Clearly, the Democratic nominee is not predetermined, and neither is the GOP’s.
