--snip--
It seems Elons latest idea is to simply turn Twitter into Whatsapp, allowing users to send each other voice notes and, in a move that nobody seemed to ask for, Twitter will apparently let users call anyone on the app, whether you follow them or not.
This is bad news for women on Twitter, and quite frankly I shouldnt have to explain why. A study across 51 countries shows that 38% of women have personally experienced online harassment, with only one in four women actually reporting it. Since Musk has taken over, there has been a noticeable surge in misogyny and other antisocial behaviors on Twitter, as reported by the BBC.
Of course, the announcement of voice and video calling features was met with confusion and much-bewildered anger as users came to grips with the possibility of their DMs blowing up with calls from absolute strangers. These new features essentially open the floodgates for women, professionals, small business owners, and prominent online figures to receive non-stop harassment.

Oh yeah... Letting people put a voice message in anyone's in box they want, yeah I'm sure that won't be abused

(16,541 posts)I haven't tweeted in years, but I've let the account stand for the convenience of being able to look at stuff over there occasionally. With this, I think Eloon may have finally found a way to run me off for real, not so much because I fear harassment myself (which seems unlikely as long as I continue not to post), but in protest of this outrageous move and in solidarity with all marginalized people whose safety is threatened by this.

(21,763 posts)Social media platform Twitter Inc will remove accounts that have been inactive for several years, CEO Elon Musk announced in a tweet on Monday, saying that the action is "important to free up abandoned handles."
https://www.reuters.com/technology/twitter-remove-inactive-accounts-2023-05-08/
There is also a rumor I've seen that going forward, any user that does not log in for 30 days will get bumped to free up user names.

(1,840 posts)when I did (I used Twitter for business, so it was a bit of a tough decision for me to delete it as I had my feed pretty well curated) I was told that my account would remain active for 30 days, then disappear.
As for reading stuff, you can still do that.

(6,602 posts)That would be exactly the kind of thing Elmo would try to do, he's desperate for revenue, & it would generate a huge outcry from users.

Even Facebook was never that bad. Normal people plus all women should get out now.

(2,910 posts)In the footsteps of Major League Bezboll, I propose:
the Designated Twitter (tm)
There is inertia behind the muskcage's long history as the supposed public square. Turned out it was a private square all along, though. But in light of that inertia, which causes a lot of current breaking information to be posted there, I say that whoever comes up with something from the muskcage should act as our Designated Twitter and post or describe the contents.
Rather than give Musk hundreds or thousands of extra clicks, this will reduce his monetization to one or a few clicks. It takes only seconds to copy and paste, slightly longer to type a description.
Videos may be an issue. I ask that someone who belongs to twitter try an experiment: see if you can grab the address of the video itself, rather than just the link to the twit (oops, almost used the wrong vowel). I do this by control-clicking, which brings up a menu giving the option to copy the link address. Other devices should have a similar process. Maybe it's possible to post a link to just the video that way.
Ohio Joe
(21,763 posts)t just gave me the full address of the tweet so it looks like twitter is hosting the video and the tweet is considered the source.
