I can safely say that the tourist hordes are not avoiding NYC (or the US) because of a fear of shootings.

(34,075 posts)I was in a Broadway show tonight! . . . Well, not on broadway since 1966 (the original) or 2009 (the most recent revival) . . . and our performance was on Main Street, rather than Broadway. But it was still a Broadway show!
No tourist hordes here at all, avoiding shootings or otherwise.

(7,611 posts)a couple of weeks ago. Took the train in. I think every seat was sold. Wildly enthusiastic crowd, many of them young people. Sweeney Todd was across the street (saw that with Angela Lansbury 40 years ago). Crowds were everywhere. Good thing we made a reservation at Joe Allen's restaurant several days in advance. Otherwise you had no shot at a table.
Broadway is definitely drawing a crowd. As always, I felt safe in the City.

(50,955 posts)I bought tickets before Covid and had to keep postponing, and finally saw it. It was worth the wait.

(50,955 posts)with all the offices half empty, the city will become too dependent on tourists. I would have hoped the empty spaces would lead to a drop in rents and real estate prices, bringing people back in, but that doesn't seem to be happening. My niece pays $3K for 400 square feet. Though she is looking to move to the Upper West Side where she can get slightly bigger for slightly less money.
But I go to a lot of shows. I was worried Hamilton wouldn't live up to the hype, but it was the best I've ever seen.
Hoping to snag some tickets to the new Camelot through my union.

No gun, just ways of dealing with creeps.

(12,022 posts)I was there just a few days ago. Remember thinking, as I walked in busy midtown, that I was far less likely to be shot there than in Texas.

(50,955 posts)problem. After that I moved slightly north of the city but commuted to work in the South Bronx for 20 years. I understood the risks, but I also understood how to be careful and stay as safe as it was possible to be in those places in those times. It wasn't scary.
What I find REALLY scary is rural places where no one can hear you scream.
And, as you say, the crazy gun states. Wouldn't go near those places.

(12,392 posts)but theater related and politically astounding.
My daughter sent me snap chat pics last night of the local dance studio recital held at the high school auditorium. The twenty high school age girls were in costume doing a number from A Handmaids Tale, red dresses, capes and bonnets. The politically astounding part? It was in a highschool auditorium in Florida. Way to go ladies and dance instructor! I bet De Santis would have blown his top if he had known about this willful display!
