(90,714 posts)Mental Health Crisis Response Units should be created to be a different category of first responder, as distinct as Fire Department is from Police.
If the cops show up to a building conflagration, they dont start shooting at the flames do they? No, they call the Fire Dept.
All categories of first responder should have it drilled into their heads about when and why to call on the others. Where there are no MHCRU, take money feom the bloated Police Dept budgets to create them, and make sure they are separate.
First, do no harm.

Until then, sue the department, the union, and the officers individually. Break the pension piggy bank.

(36,444 posts)Kinda like that what 'Defund the police' thingy was all about
In the United States, "defund the police" is a slogan that supports removing funds from police departments and reallocating them to non-policing forms of public safety and community support, such as social services, youth services, housing, education, healthcare and other community resources.

(90,714 posts)Regarding your point: mental hospitals do not have the personnel or power to go out into a community like that. The only agency we seem to empower to capture and transport a person in crisis are armed police. They need training in how to respond if thats the only mechanism available. Then if the patient and their loved ones are lucky, the person in crisis may get a big ol 72 hour hold.

(36,309 posts)"Tolson said that Mullinax had active arrest warrants through the York Police Department for a violent felony and malicious injury to personal property. Sheriffs deputies claim that Mullinax pulled and pointed a weapon at them when they arrived following a request for a wellness check for Mullinax. He said all four deputies fired their weapons at Mullinax"
"Tolson also said the SLED investigation shows upon arriving at the hospital after being by deputies, Mullinax told medical personnel that he wanted to kill himself but then decided to have the police do it.
Tolson denounced criticism against police officers for their handling of situations that should not be the responsibility of law enforcement and said more mental health resources are needed."
