an alternative to the debt ceiling besides the 14th

just shut off ALL payments to red states. not one dollar. not SS checks,no federal aid,not a single dollar.

that should allow the rest of the country to continue on as normal while the red states suffer. and when the red states start crying offer them the choice. either a clean debt ceilin increase (or better a repeal) or else they can continue to suffer.

i excpect it would take no more than a day or 2 for them to see the light

1. Included in that will be the complete cut off of money/pay to the military bases in red states.

And that includes all of our nuclear bases with silos in red states. Not a dime!

use of the 14th would be the ideal situation to get rid of the debt ceiling once and for all but if that fails and the choice is either a full default that screws everyone or just hitting the red states the choice is clear. and i live in a red state and my wife is on SS and medicare

The same isn't true in my situation.

Besides, it will take months before a court would have a hearing about the constitutionality of invoking the 14th amendment, which will then be sent to an appellate court and finally the Supreme Court. Thus, one of two outcomes will occur:

1) It is constitutional to invoke the 14th amendment and I'll continue collecting the benefits rather than experiencing the draconian cuts you are proposing.
2) It is unconstitutional, and everyone is screwed but at least during the time a decision is awaited I will be collecting the benefits rather than experiencing the draconian cuts you are proposing.

So now matter what the outcome is regarding the constitutionality of invoking the 14th amendment at least for some period of time I will be receiving some benefits. It would be nice not to ever have to worry about the debt ceiling impacting those benefits ever again, but in the meantime something is better nothing.

Finally, we really need to stop with this red state/blue state crap. This is the United States so everyone is both part of the problem and part of the solution. If the ship sinks, there are no other boats to get into. Any proposal of this nature is only going to result in retaliation so why even suggest going down that rabbit hole?

it would be only a matter of days for a court to either approve or deny a restraining order.

as for it being the united states and retaliation teh GOP has already destroyed that concept.

I agree that the GOP is despicable, but I don't see any positive benefit for the country if Democrats behave like Republicans.

He held back masks and medical equipment from blue states until the governor supplicated.

So I see no issue with the Executive Branch "priortizing" whatever funding there is to carry out the budget priorities approved by Congress.

I remember the Democratic governor of Illinois arranging for a plane to bring in some medical equipment in the middle of the night, right? And other unusual maneuvers by other governors. Even the moderate Republican governor of Maryland was said to have pulled some good little needed subterfuges.

against their representatives.

Please, next time imagine it's YOUR income cut off indefinitely, your stores closing, your neighborhood full of empty homes and crashing equity as former neighbors leave to find jobs, plus all the rest.

Not thinking or caring about what the consequences of what they want, even wishing!, is not an excuse for the MAGAs, so why should it be for anyone else?

Maybe they could somehow just expose the pretenses of the right-wingers in the government, who are not really helping their lower-income constituents, and then help these people get some truly good benefits and resources.
