Hundreds of Sinema's Democratic donors migrate to Gallego

https://www.yahoo.com/news/hundreds-sinema-democratic-donors-migrate-013100731.html

Since Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., left the Democratic Party last year, she’s shed hundreds of donors who now give to the Democrat hoping to take her place in the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., has raised at least $393,000 in the first quarter of 2023 from more than 300 donors who previously gave to Sinema’s Senate campaign, according to an analysis of campaign finance records from the Arizona Republic.

The sum represents about one in four dollars Gallego raised from publicly disclosed donors in the first quarter, per the Republic, and was more than the $307,000 Sinema raised in the same time period from her own former donors.

“Sinema has repeatedly broken promises and left working Arizonans behind,” Rebecca Katz, a top consultant to the Gallego campaign, said in a statement to Deseret News. “She’s lost their trust — that’s why her donors are lining up behind Ruben and his vision for Arizona’s future.”

I got an email from her, asking my concerns. I should have replied that my main concern was her behavior and that I was donating to Gallego

The US senate election in Connecticut had Joe Lieberman run on a third party ticket after he lost the D primary to Ned Lamont. Lieberman won with 49.7% of the vote, Lamont 39.7%, and the Republican candidate 9.6%.

In Texas, two independent candidates had high profiles. Republican Rick Perry won with 39% of the vote, Democrat Chris Bell 29.8%, and the two ind candidates 20.5%.

Does Sinema have as much cross ticket appeal as Lieberman had? Clearly not, given the likes of Kari Lake who dominated Arizona’s losing R ticket last year.

I get the sense Bell would’ve lost re-election in 2010 given the national disfavoring of Democrats that year (similar to 1994 or 1980).

Her donors dont want her to win. She knows full well she couldnt win a primary, which was why she went indy. And she knows full well she would likely lose a GE even without a democrat in the race.

They are just paying her to shave a few points off the democrat via name recognition, then get out of the way. thats what shes being paid for.

Manchin I understand. I don't like him, but I know the line he has to walk and the sacrifices Dems have to make to have a blue seat in WV.

But Sinema pulled the wool over EVERYONE'S eyes and was a major line of defense for the GOP, derailing many of our goals in the Senate. nothing like her can EVER happen again.

You're that ill-informed about how the DNC works?

The DNC does not choose candidates. They leave candidate selections to local parties to some degree, but mostly to voters. They are a support for candidates (providing access to donors, consultants and other staffers, giving them proprietary polling data, helping set up websites, and so forth), they host the convention where the party delegates (NOT the DNC) chooses presidents, but they are NOT a kingmaker, in any way, shape or form. The DNC may provide donor lists and the rest, but the candidates are responsible for what they do with that info. No one else.

So for someone like Sinema, vetting her would have been through the Arizona state party and the voters. Not the DNC.

Being hands-off about campaigns, rather than micromanagers of the process is one of the things that makes true the adage about dealing with Democrats as being like herding cats, but it's also a strength in how it keeps the politics local--and in the hands of the voters. It's why an Elizabeth Warren can run and win in MA, while a Joe Manchin runs and wins in WV--both reflect the states they come from, rather than following the lockstep "ein volk, ein reich, ein fuhrer" of that other party.

Or, to put it another way, the DNC is bottom up control, in contrast to the top down micromanaged control of the RNC.

as a Democrat, and won.

And so, I now also gave to Gallego, at the outset of his campaign, and will continue to do so.

So I guess I am also one of those donors. I hope it helps, and I think it will.

But clearly she is either receiving or expecting to receive enough financial incentive to stay in the race. Whether that be donations or a job offer for after she loses her seat.

The Republicans dont need or want her to win. They just want her to shave enough points off of the Democrat to allow a Republican to win.

She was never going to win re-election and also get the personal payouts she wants.

So shes being paid to run. Not to win. To run. Sometimes running a spoiler works. Sometimes it doesnt. And Arizona is new enough in the blue column to be worth the investment to the people paying her.
