OH-SEN: The disturbing 'Trumpification' of Frank LaRose (R) puts power before his original brand
Imagine Frank LaRose sometime last fall declaring that he opposed efforts to raise the threshold for voter approval of proposed constitutional amendments. Or, more recently, stating that he favored Ohio sticking with changes made last year to limit August elections.
Would such stances by the secretary of state have prevented what has happened, the Republican majorities at the Statehouse hustling to the August ballot a plan to increase the threshold from the current simple majority to a supermajority of 60%?
Hard to say, his fellow Republicans so overwhelmingly in charge. This much can be said: The secretary would have been truer to past form, or at least to the brand he carefully shaped from his start in public life.
LaRose has portrayed himself as a politician who works well with others, Democrats and Republicans. He ran counter to the deepening polarization, fashioning the image of a problem-solver first, a pol uncomfortable with labels, who understands the need for dialogue and, ultimately, compromise.
