On June 8th, a New York court will hear a case that could pave the way for a new Democratic gerrymander
Dems could easily nuke *5* GOP seats (including George Santos')
Coincidentally, to flip the House Dems need just... 5 seats
But until there's a national law against it, blue states can't afford to unilaterally disarm while red states gerrymander Dems into oblivion
So... nuke 'em

(94,595 posts)The flaw is that the redistricting law that Cuomo got passed said "no gerrymandering". Until the Legislature passes an amendment, the best that will be possible is absolutely non-partisan district lines.

(15,428 posts)NYers voted to ban gerrymandering in 2014. It would never hold up in any court.

(21,486 posts)Did you see what western NY looks like on that map? Solid red except for Rochester and Buffalo. People outside of NY have no idea how red the state is outside of the main cities.

(205,467 posts)The frustrating thing is, NY-21 was represented by a moderate Democrat until 2015 when he retired. Before that we had been included in NY-20, represented by Democrats Kirsten Gillibrand and then Scott Murphy, and I worked on both Rep. Murphy's campaigns, he was actually local and I liked him a lot. *sigh*

(21,486 posts)The figures are based on waste water testing. My area is rated moderate for infection and mild for hospitalization. I checked it because I am getting negative feedback for still wearing a mask indoors in public.
I expect that the rate will go up in the week after Memorial Day and again after July 4th. Always does after holidays.
I noticed some higher hospitalization rates over your way. Downstate looked good, though.

(205,467 posts)Even last year the sidewalks were packed, as usual - and I drove through there today and it's starting. They come from everywhere, today I followed a car from Tennessee and earlier this week I saw Indiana and Kentucky. And the "snowbirds" are returning from Florida. Not to mention, we have our share of anti-vaxxers locally.

(8,254 posts)My state banned gerrymandering as well and no one really cared to enforce that ban, even our state Supreme Court.

(10,185 posts)You can put in all the laws you want, if no one upholds them, they mean nothing.
That's why Trump stole classified material and is stomping around free, and not in jail like anyone else would be. That's why Trump sold presidential pardons.
That's why anti-trust laws mean nothing. That's why W was president. That's why Putin controls our politics. That's why women are forced to birth unwanted infants if they are poor and live in a Republican state.
It's all about enforcement.

(26,748 posts)Its one thing to allow gerrymandering in the face of a lower court that tried to forbid it even though state law did not
its another thing entirely to require gerrymandering that state law expressly forbids.
