TN county operations taken over by conservatives will be "reflective of the Judeo-Christian values"

Tensions in heavily GOP Tenn. county after conservative takeover reflect wider battle over elections

GALLATIN, Tenn. (AP) — Shortly after being sworn in last fall, the new majority of the Sumner County Commission in Tennessee acted to update one of its official documents. The new version said county operations would not only be orderly and efficient, but “most importantly reflective of the Judeo-Christian values inherent in the nation’s founding.”

It was an important moment for the 14 commissioners who had campaigned under the banner of the Sumner County Constitutional Republicans. The group had waged a political war on fellow Republicans they viewed as insufficiently conservative in this fast-growing region north of Nashville during a bitter primary a few months before.

Since taking control, that majority has halted plans for a new building, rejected federal grants and tried to give away a historical property, actions it said were in line with its commitment to fiscal responsibility, protecting property owners and managing growth. The group also has been involved in an escalating feud with the county’s election commission in ways that have prompted concerns about whether preparations for the 2024 presidential election will be affected.

Those early moves have been cheered by their supporters. But some Republicans and community members say the commissioners are operating outside political norms, inviting lawsuits and jeopardizing elections and other county operations.

“What’s happened here is the Sumner County constitutional conservative Republican group, they don’t believe in government,” said Baker Ring, a Republican who is serving his fourth term on the county commission and is not aligned with the new majority. “They’re opposed to government. But now they are the government.”

...has to be the most meaningless bromide ever. Especially after the way Jews were treated in Christendom for centuries.

Way too many christians glom onto anything that makes them look better, or makes their numbers look better, than they actually are. But just let anything make them look bad, and they can't disavow their supposed brethren fast enough. Soon as anyone steps out of line in a way that makes them look bad, here comes the braying about "fake" christians.

The Big Book of Bad Ideas had zero concept of democracy. The only form of government it recognizes is absolute monarchy. Sure, there's some bleating about the ordinary people sharing in little communes, but they will still have that absolute ruler. It's "render unto Caesar"--*not* render unto the Roman Senate or any other legislative body.

And most of the 10Cs they all bray about are in direct violation of the US Constitution.

As I told one of the nutters who bandied this ridiculous idea about, "I have a copy of the Constitution in my car (I really did). I'll bring that, you bring your fantasy fiction, and we'll see how they line up, starting with which one explicitly prohibits a religious test for office--which is not your book, just so you know. I can assure you that it doesn't get any better for your stupid and dishonest claim from there."
