A bill that would allow Illinois businesses to build bathrooms that are open to all genders moved closer to passing last week. Still, a comment by a Republican state senator during debates Thursday is being condemned by politicians and activist groups.
On the Senate floor that day, state Sen. Neil Anderson claimed that mixed-gender, multiple-occupancy restrooms would inspire physical altercations, saying that he himself could be driven to violence if a guy walked into the same bathroom as his 10-year-old daughter.
Im telling you right now, if a guy walks in there, Im going to beat the living piss out of him, Anderson said as his supporters cheered. So this is going to cause violence, and its going to cause violence from dads like me.
Later in the meeting, Sen. Mike Simmons (D), Illinoiss first openly gay state senator, said that Andersons comments were so offensive they should be stricken from the record.
I wouldnt want a single person in the state to read that record, Simmons said, and think that anybody here would come after them if they would do something so mundane as to use the bathroom, a simple call of nature.

(742 posts)More individualized ones. No walking in and looking where you dont need to look.

(24,301 posts)I see more and more of these in businesses and no problems.
And when you think about it, we all have single use multi-gender bathrooms in our own homes, don't we? Even State Senator Simmons does, I'm sure.

(15,822 posts)Can you imagine a grown man going to the bathroom next to a ten year old girl? These politicians dont think at all. Individual bathrooms period.

(28,340 posts)No really. Hes talking about beating the piss out of someone for the crime of needing the toilet.
On my planet the bathroom stalls are not made of transparent materials so Im not sure why the grown man emptying his bladder is an issue.

(2,358 posts)Uh, as it stands that grown man can currently be in the same bathroom as my 9 year old boy. Should I beat him up for that as well?

(16,110 posts)so, why is it a giant problem? If the parent felt uncomfortable about it, they could go in and stand by the stall door to be sure that...what? The person in the next stall didn't pee too loudly?

Just say NO to Extra-judicial Violence.
Just say NO to vigilantes.
Get clued in to the very real threats against good people. Please do not promulgate them!
Are you going to be the first to beat him up? Since you say that Anderson's threat of violence "has a point honestly", whereby you endorse the violence.
Shaking my head.

(12,660 posts)...to the bathroom of her birth gender, he's going to beat the shit out of her, too?
There are cis-women with masculine features, who may be unusually tall, or may have alopecia or some other condition. Of course, there are also intersex, hermaphroditic, and more petite persons in the middle of gender transition where you just can't tell.
So he's easily going to mistake somewhere near 2,% of the population who can use "a woman's restroom" - including his acceptable "biologically born females" and assault them like the tough guy he thinks he is.
Why does he think he has to protect his daughter? Does he also closely chaperone her to sports, church, or school where it's far more likely there could be a man who can possibly do things to her in private?

(20,851 posts)me you never spent a day raising your kids. Literally every kids place these days has family rooms. They're common and already exist. The thing that he thinks will cause violence exists without incident because normal people think "shit isn't great there's this family room to bring my 4 year daughter into instead of the men's room."
