Why is McCarthy playing games with the debt ceiling?

Because he is a terrible leader and doesn’t know what he is doing! Period!

As I look back former GOBer leaders like Newt and Boehner! They may have been a pain to deal with and played hardball with the debt ceiling and budget but they did get it done before a crisis hit. Yes they cause the government to shut down, but they never caused the collapse of our economy which could easily happen in one week. It’s not the president job to balance the budget, it Congress whose job it is. The president oks it after the budget is passed.

So, maybe McCarthy do his job and quit whining about his how he will look to the other GOBers?

Look at his demands, they are mostly gifts to the fossil fuel industry. The price of oil will probably sky rocket under a default.

Follow the money.

We don't know the answer to this question yet, 'Who will the voters blame for an economic collapse if we default on the debt?"

If McCarthy and Republicans think Biden will be blamed, we're going to have a dfault period. They care zero of the damage it will cause, the lives it will destroy, or the long term harm to the world economy. Republicans would burnt he whole country down if it meant they could rule over the ashes. They literally don't care about America or the people in it, they care only about power.

I think he has full knowledge how terrible it will be to default, but the morons that fill his party don't know, don't care, or think it will be a great things. Literally most of these people you would allow to wash your car, but somehow they've been elected to Congress. And McCarthy has to play nice with them or he's finished.

Thus, we will default. There will be no deal.

I know it's crass, and a little sexist to equate intestinal fortitude with testicals, but I'm feeling salty.

He traed every bit of integrity to be speaker. He doesn't have much choice if he wants to keep being speaker.

He'd rather be rememberd as a shitty speaker than not being remembered at all.

From memory, BOTH of them looked as inflexible as McCarthy a few weeks before the date when the government would run out of money. However, it is McCarthy's weak position and his complete lack of gravitas and willingness to put country before his party and even more so his position.

What scares me is whether he actually knows (and accepts internally) is that there is NO bill that could pass the Senate which can pass the Senate without Democratic votes. So, there is no possible solution that leaves the MTGs of the House happy with him. One thing that will likely come back to bite him is his acceptance of the amendment to House rules that any Republican can initiate what elsewhere would be called a vote of no confidence.

In the same position, Newt or Boehner would have tried to get as much as their wish list while making other concessions to get the number of Democrats needed to pass a compromise. McCarthy is actually going in the opposite direction - adding more RW wish list items ... and considering that the ONLY compromise on their side in not burning down the economy for some period of time. (Note - from his perspective, the less he allows the cap to be raised, the quicker he gets to do this all over again!!)
