Tim Scott comes right out and says what the GOP wants for ordinary Americans.

I was raised in a single-parent household in North Charleston, South Carolina. My mom worked 16-hour days to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. I got my first job, changing oil at a gas station, when I was 13. And I wouldn’t ask for it to be any other way.

Right everybody wants their mom to work 16 hours a day and their kid to get a job in a gas station. That’s the American dream

You grow up like this, you can come to two conclusions: one, nobody should have to live like this, or, two: I'm gonna drag everyone down to this level to make it fair.
Clarence Thomas said:
"The liberals made my life miserable for 43 years," a former clerk remembered Thomas – who was 43 years old when confirmed – saying, according to The New York Times. "And I'm going to make their lives miserable for 43 years."

Working at a young age builds character and teaches responsibility.

I had a morning and evening paper route as soon as I turned 12 and I turned out ok...

I babysat, my husband had a paper route, and our son worked some of the time in our family business. However, I do think it's hard to protect children from exploitation and dangerous conditions. For example, it's not safe for a child to do oil changes.

..and it's a good thing his own eyesight/dexterity/general health was good enough to change oil at 13. But it's still not the flex he thinks it is.

Most of my friends picked berries and beans during the summer to earn spending money. Some needed the cash for clothes.

The old school bus would pick us up at around 5:30 am for a ride to the farm where we picked until early afternoon. We were in a "platoon" with one of the moms managing the group for the farmer. Sometimes, I made four dollars!

I probably got too much sun...and exposure to pesticides, but I think in general, kids working is a good thing.
I will not be pulling my hair out over relaxed child labor laws as long as hours are regulated and enhanced safety measures are applied.

I understand the sentiment that the experiences we have are what makes us who we are, I have said that in the past. I had my son when I turned 21, being a young father helped to shape me into who I am today.

I love my son and who he is as an adult. I certainly would not change who he is, but I am sure that some of the bad stuff we went through could stand a "do over" in which I would have made some better decisions.

Scott's mentality is typical of Conservatives and specifically POC who are conservative. The problem is that the SYSTEM is fucked up when anyone has to work 16 hours a day to support a family and where a 13 year old has to work for subsistence. That should not happen to anyone regardless of the "fortitude" and character you think it provides you.

It is like saying, "My parents used to beat the shit out of me and tell me I wouldn't amount to anything. I showed them. I have my own business and am doing "just fine". Says the man who has been divorced 3 times has strained relationships with the 5 children from the 3 marriages, when asked if spanking is bad.

Yes, overcoming adversity can build resilience, but there is ALWAYS adversity in human existence. Look at the Trump kids. They grew up rich and look how fucked up they are. The goal should be to REDUCE TRAUMA in life, not to say, "I grew up fucked up and overcame it, so other people should grow up just as fucked up as I did". I want my children to have a better life than I did growing up, not the same shit I went through.
