Bob Woodward roasts Trumps everything is mine take in unprecedented copyright suit: Interview tapes belong to the People...........
Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump filed a $50 million lawsuit against Woodward in a federal court in Florida, over the publication of the audiobook The Trump Tapes: The Historical Record. Trump claims that Woodward promised only to use the 19 recorded interviews for the 2020 bestseller, Rage. Woodwards release of the companion audiobook, Trump argues, systematically, blatantly, and unlawfully usurped his copyright interests, his contractual rights, and the rights he holds as an interviewee.
...........
No President before Donald Trump has ever claimed to own a copyright in presidential interviews or demanded royalties for their republication, McNamara wrote in the 44-page memo.
In the introduction of the filing, Woodwards legal team provides a historical overview of how ex-presidents relied upon the Fourth Estate. The Hartford Courant published Washingtons first inaugural address to Congress, and Abraham Lincoln spoke to The New York Times to convey why he allowed Black troops to join the Unions fight, the filing notes.
...............
Woodwards attorneys excoriated Trumps unprecedented effort to extract private benefit from his public duties.
As if on a mission to prove this everything is mine thesis, Donald Trump, in his individual capacity, asserts that he owns Woodwards entire Work because it includes words spoken by President Trump, 45th President of the United States of America,' the filing states. And President Trump seeks to profit from his public service by demanding Defendants pay him nearly $50 million.

And demanding a share of royalties!

(24,303 posts)Trump will be required to pay all of Woodward's legal expences, and Woodward will never see a dime of it. When Trump dies, the people trying to attach his estate for the money he lost in court will break all-time records.

(3,395 posts)If both are implemented the way they were meant to be implemented the crooks would have a very hard time doing their dirty deeds, but in the USA people in general have come to idolize those with money, which has opened the door to political crooks to mold the laws to help them get away with murder.
Many people say "Politics is so dirty", which is not true, politics is beautiful, the problem is that we have dirty politicians in the republican party, and that makes it look as if politics is dirty.
We need strong accountability, the first amendment must be more specific, one should be able to have opinions as long as they are based on the truth, the 1st amendment should not condone lies and defamation. Politicians should be banned from lying, there must be rules, very strong ones that punish those who lie.

Of course, to have good government we have to elect good people. That means more of us need to live up to our responsibilities than have been.
We're extremely fortunate that our government's principles and institutions have held up much better under attack than the electorate has. Previous regulations were created by those who came before and dismantled with the approval of most of those here now.

(33 posts)Has anyone ever stood up to Trump? I don't mean in the courts I mean personally? As in get right up in his face and say fuck you asshole! Has that happened at any point in his life? It won't happen now with his secret service protection but I just wonder if he's ever been called out?

(4,741 posts)I don't think any court is stupid enough to side with TFG, but, to play devil's advocate, let's say he does win. What he says, belongs to him.
Well, publishers and reporters won't take that lying down for one instant. They'll protect their own interests by demanding that interviewees sign release statements, up front, insuring that whatever gets said in an interview belongs to the publication or reporter, not to the celebrity. Those who don't sign, won't get interviewed. "Sorry, we can't take the risk of liability if you change your mind about what you tell us and decide to sue after we publish."
What's great about that is that this slimy scumbag won't sign, at least not in the beginning, because he thinks all of his "his" words belong only to him.
So nobody will interview him. Imagine that. No more TFG!
Well, he won't have that. He couldn't live without the attention, so he'll start signing the releases so fast we'll all get whiplash. And then the legit press will have him, right where they want him: At their mercy.
Was it Twain who said never to cross those who buy ink by the barrel? Because they will get the last word here, one way or another.
