Stockholm Syndrome, which comes from intense mistreatment for a prolonged time. It's a coping mechanism to withstand a reality too painful to bear.

Nobody brutalized these horrible people. They chose to be awful out of their own bloody-minded stupidity and sheer meanness. Nobody forced them in the least to any of that. They were always that way, even if some of them didn't let it show until they got approval for it from a supposed authority figure.

But make no mistake--they were stupid and cruel all along. With every single one of these monsters, if you go back over what you know of them, you'll see where they let it leak out in the past. People might have overlooked it at the time...but when they really think about it, they're never really surprised to learn that the monster out in full force was always there, lurking.
