🚨 BREAKING: House Republicans have an agreement in principle with the White House on a debt-limit deal.

White House, Republicans Reach Deal to Avert US Default

White House and Republican negotiators reached a tentative deal to raise the US debt ceiling and avert a default that threatened to send tremors through the global economy, according to people familiar.

President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy must now shepherd the framework deal, negotiated in extended discussions, to final legislative passage over the objections of hardline lawmakers in both parties. There’s little margin for error, with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warning that an extension must be finalized by June 5 to avoid a historic default that would send borrowing costs soaring.

There really were only two options: default or strike a deal. Defaulting wasn't going to happen.

It's scary how out of step some people are. If we defaulted, and the economy crashed, Biden would get the blame as the president. The president ALWAYS gets the blame over economic conditions. It's why Obama barely won reelection despite his presidency starting AFTER the Great Recession! But by 2012, the growth wasn't strong enough that people were seriously ready to hand the presidency back to the Republicans!

If the economy collapsed, and plunged the US into a massive recession, Biden's ratings would sink and he'd become dangerously vulnerable to losing reelection. Like, at that point I'd pretty much guarantee it.

I really believe that a default is the greatest threat to Biden's re-election. People just assume that the public will rightly assign the blame to Republicans, but I don't put that much faith in the electorate, especially given the likely fallout.

Not caving, the economy collapsing and Biden getting beat by Trump next year?

In that scenario, the bad guys win outright.

Until the "deal" is public.

Sorry, I have faith in Democrats but not in Republicans. If Republicans think anything is a good deal it should be met with significant scepticism because it's going to be very bad for everyone else.

Compromise is great as long as you're not the one being compromised.

Compromise together just like Biden said. We are a multi party system but run by two parties. each side has the right to be heard and listened to. Joe Biden is the best and he knows how to protect us
