I can't help but think that one of the reasons is the availability of guns in this country and that the job now is probably more dangerous now than ever.

I seem to recall that the Uvalde shooting - the police were scared to go into the building and that was a factor in the time it took to end that crisis.

The proliferation of AR-15 - and knowing the damage that they can do - I can only assume that many are thinking twice about becoming a cop these days.

1. Even with the proliferation of guns, Police don't make the top 25 list of most dangerous jobs

in the country. Now tree cutters or roofers, driving a farm tractor, or being a convenience store clerk; those are dangerous jobs but I have never heard one of them whine, "I never know if I am coming home this evening." Being a cop is a crappy job, but it is not that dangerous for the cop. The biggest danger in cop's interactions with people is to the person the cop is dealing with. Maybe they are having trouble recruiting because the current supply of bullies is down.

My governor is solving the problem by paying bonuses to bad cops, removed from other agencies, to come to Florida to police our citizens. Bad cops make for good Nazis.

2. I am close to several cops

Both friends and family, and most of them have mentioned recruiting is hard to come by these days, especially in big cities. A lot of big city police are flocking to suburbs and small towns where they get often get paid more with less stress. One of my good friends from college was a Lieutenant in a big city department, but now is a Chief in a small town where he makes more money and a safer environment for his kids.
