9. Wage theft/Unions

I used to believe in unions. I was Secretary, then VP of my local teacher's union. I served on many, many committees for the NYS teachers' union, NYSUT. I was a Political Action Coordinator. I was the first person at school every morning. A co-worker and I took part in a year-long tech grant. BOCES was so impressed they gave us an extra stipend. The bakery that my Entrepreneurship class ran was nationally recognized by a Leavey Award. I was nominated to serve on Commissioner King's Teachers Advisory Council. Despite all of this, after 26 years of teaching, my principal called me on a Friday and basically told me not to come back. Budget cuts. In January! Where did the money go? All staff positions were budgeted for the year. They stole the 223 leave days I had saved up. I should have been paid for them. They stole the rest of my year's pay. I am single. I was let go with no warning, no severance, no insurance, no nothing. And I was VP of the union. Obviously, some meetings must have occurred without my knowledge.

How's that for wage theft?

it sounds to me like you were treated terribly. How long ago was this? 223 days is near a full year of employment. That is serious enough that you should have sued for recompense. I'm sorry this happened to you, but how is it you are blaming the Union for this? They didn't fire you. The district did. My experiences with my Union have taught me that you have to fight for yourself if you want others to stand up for you. FYI in my 13 years in a Union shop (that i organized and am a steward at), the people that complain about the Union most... are the shittiest workers.

There were meetings between the District and my union president. The union had a duty to represent me. Rather than do that, they served me up as a sacrificial lamb. The District told the union president that somehow the school was short $500K midway through the year. Then there was big drama with the elementary principal being let go because she was abusing Lortab and unable to do her job. The Super got into her medical records, illegally, so she sued. The District had to give her a big payout when she left. I think between investigations and her payout, that came to around $600K. The District told the union that either a teacher had to go or there would be no spring sports (God forbid!). So, they sold me out. I felt I could not sue because I needed 8 more years before I could retire. How could I go to interviews while suing my last school? Plus, I taught an elective (high school business). It's hard to get hired in that area and as an older teacher.

Though under different circumstances.

The teaching industry is weak in many ways and I especially know how you feel about being unable to get the next job if you challenge the last one. I was not-rehired for entirely bogus reasons that stemmed from a harassment matter by a director right after I asked for a simple meeting with HR. I could have challenged it but left to work for a nonprofit instead.

I hope you enjoyed your time at the nonprofit. I really never wanted to teach again. I applied for all kinds of clerical jobs but never received replies. When I was finally offered a job at a new school, I figured I had better take it. I had to start at half of what I had been making. But, it was all ok. My last 8 years were wonderful. Small classes in a rural school. My high schoolers were amazing people. I'm still in touch with some of them. I was in one girl's wedding and played the organ for two others at their weddings.

I was being treated poorly for outshining my supervisor and brought into a room for a chat one morning, his admin in a chair next to him. I had gotten attention from other districts for the good works I did and he felt he should have been the one honored.

When the admin is there as a witness, it's not good.

I asked HR for a meeting about what I am and am not permitted to do under contract, my outside work for a nonprofit being one of the reasons I was so successful and I wanted to get things clear.

That was probably reported to the supervisor (a meeting was never had) and it was that time of year that positions are eliminated if needed and I was notified that my position (a coordinator, not teacher on special assignment) was being eliminated.

That was in March, I could have stayed in the same building doing the same work but was instead demoted down to work with the home schooling program. My stepfather had just passed and my mom was on her way out so I just resigned, she passed a month later.

Anyway, there are a lot of ways to piss off admins and sometimes it for doing a better job for kids than they are. There's a lot of graft and grant moneys that get misdirected.

I'm still working with schools, teachers, and students, from the outside.

Good luck in all you do!
