A friend of mine was talking to me the other day and mentioned something a bit funny that kind of got me thinking. In her office she needs someone part-time to do different clerical tasks like answer phones, filings, paperwork, etc.. basically a secretary. So she advertised for "secretary" back in the summer. And every single applicant was female. 100%. What's funny is the girl she hired had quit and moved away, so she had to recently advertise again but she happened to advertise the position as a "administrative assistant" this time. This time about 40% of the applicants were male!
So it seems guys have a problem taking a job title "secretary" but have less of a problem being an "administrative assistant" even though both job tasks are the same.
It got me thinking though how many positions out there we link with a gender, even today. I wonder if it effects what job-seekers apply to or even who employers hire....

(6,342 posts)I've been to countless dentists through my life, every single hygienist and dental assistant was female.
A male nurse isn't all that uncommon these days.

(14,345 posts)I see this in both application programming (where I work) as well as network/hardware/tech support. DBA work is a smaller subset, but from what I have seen, it's still very male dominated.
