Republican Congressman attacks congressional pages! Bipartisan response.

From this mornings Politico Playbook:

"TURN THE PAGE — Freshman Rep. DERRICK VAN ORDEN (R-Wis.) came under fire yesterday after he reportedly cursed at a group of Senate pages who were laying in the rotunda late Wednesday night, admiring the frescoes, Punchbowl scooped. (It is not uncommon for members of Congress to do this with tour groups.) The high school-aged pages, who come to Washington for their junior years and work long hours in the Capitol while attending classes in the morning, were in their final week on the job.

What Van Orden said, per The Hill’s Al Weaver, citing “a transcript” written by one of the pages shortly after the incident: “Wake the f‑‑‑ up, you little s‑‑‑‑. … What the f‑‑‑ are you all doing? Get the f‑‑‑ out of here. You are defiling the space you [pieces of s‑‑‑]. … I don’t give a f‑‑‑ who you are, get out.”

Van Orden, in a statement, cited the “history of the United States Capitol Rotunda, that during the Civil War it was used as a field hospital and countless Union soldiers died on that floor, and they died because they were fighting the Civil War to end slavery. And I think that place should be treated with a tremendous amount of respect for the dead.”

On the Senate floor last night, Majority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER addressed Van Orden’s outburst and paid tribute to the pages: “I understand that late last night, a member of the House majority thought it appropriate to curse at some of these young people, these teenagers in the Rotunda. I was shocked when I heard about it. And I am further shocked at his refusal to apologize to these young people.”

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell concurred: “I want to associate myself with the remarks of the majority leader. Everybody on this side of the aisle feels exactly the same way.”

for a while now...

This is not the first time Van Orden has flashed his temper. Van Orden reportedly threatened a 17-year-old library page in his home state over a gay pride display and demanded to know who set it up. The page in question had set the display up, and she told her parents she did not feel safe to return to the library for work.

"Minority Leader Mitch McConnell concurred: “I want to associate myself with the remarks of the majority leader. Everybody on this side of the aisle feels exactly the same way.”

Which is obviously a lie considering how many republicans still defend the actual defiling of the Capital on January 6th.

Van Orden participated in the January 6th "Stop the Steal" rally[6] and was present at the United States Capitol during the January 6 United States Capitol attack.[7][8]

Congressman cursing at Congressional pages and Congressman ATTACKS Congressional pages are two very different things. An asshole R is an asshole R, no need to overhype.

I guess he's a former Navy Seal. I will respect that part of him. I certainly won't respect his behavior now.

Want to show you respect sacrifice? Then hold a press conference and publicly condemn white Nationalism and efforts to erase history by groups like Moms for Liberty and Florida. Publically condemn the former Presidents efforts to overthrow the government and stage an insurrection. Do that FIRST. Until then you're just Full of Sxxt.

You can still respect the Seals and have zero respect for him.

I will always respect those that served. They signed up. I have no idea what this guys record looks like. So I give the benefit of the doubt until I see evidence otherwise. Until I see evidence they betrayed the country while still serving they receive that respect.

Once they leave, it's a clean slate. Like this guy.
