How can someone this dangerous and criminal be the leading candidate for a political party?

I just still can't even comprehend how Trump is still the top choice for the GOP and that Trump is even allowed to run.

He is the biggest criminal in American history.

Normally, a party would have someone leading the charge against this kind of person. But, republican party has been overtaken by TFG since 2016 so there is no one "reasonable" left there anymore.

There will always be ruthless sociopaths who want power and wealth.

But nowadays, Americans adore them and elect them to high office.

10. One word CONSERVATISM

Conservatives (The ones with power) believe that they RIGHTFULLY, by God's divine providence, should be in charge. They believe the same things that Trump believes, without the blatant and obvious self serving and vulgarly corrupt personal traits. Still, the mindset of Mitch McConnell and Trump ultimately end up at the same place. Rich, White, typically Protestant Christian MEN should be in charge and all others should be subservient.

Trump found a way to connect at a cult like level with a solid part of the Conservative base. People who truly understand and believe in the actual Conservative ideology are a small minority because of the pyramidal structure of society in which they believe. The benefit and power stays at the top, and while the various stratum have their own benefits and power, ultimately power coalesces at the very top and they ALWAYS want MORE so eventually they have to take it away from the lower stratum, which means fewer and fewer people will get any benefits.

You can't really sell that as a viable strategy so instead they sell grievance, resentment, fear, racism, sexism, Christian dominionism, etc... wrapped up in fake nostalgia for a "better and more simple time".

While there can certainly be authoritarianism on the Left, Conservatism absolutely lends itself enthusiastically to authoritarianism. It is built into the ideology, no matter what they say about the "rights of the individual". You cannot have democracy with a hierarchical pyramid structure to your society.

Trump is the Freudian ID to the Conservative Ego and Superego.

This is what happens when all the adults were forced to leave the room. Corker, McCain, Flake among others were all forced out of the party so the only voices left were the ones parroting the message that TFG wanted repeated. Trump creates a feeling in his supporters. He’s a political dopamine hit for these people. So when the message is repeated over and over and it makes them feel good nothing else can get through and there’s not enough opposition to break through even if they could. The GOP primary is a joke cause at best they barely criticize trump. So why go with someone else if they don’t give you another message.
