>>Teen Killed Himself on New Year's Day
Parents of Jeffrey Fehr say their 18-year-old son killed himself New Year's Day because of a school life in which he was tormented by antigay bullies.
"We will second-guess ourselves forever," his father told The Sacramento Bee, which recounted what led up to the suicide in its report today. "But we do know that for years and years, people knocked him down for being different. It damaged him. It wore on him. He could never fully believe how wonderful he was, and how many people loved him."
Fehr was out to friends and family, and he was a former captain of his high school cheer team. Fehr was being treated for depression and attending Sierra College, but his parents told the Bee that the bullying appears to have left too deep an impression.
Fehr was teased for being different beginning in the third grade, then called "fag" for the first time in sixth grade, and high school is described as "pure hell." >>

(36,221 posts)Each and everyone of these stories kills a piece of me!
Schools have got to start being held accountable for allowing bullying.

(4,919 posts)I would like to know, but will probably never know... How many of these suicidal kids were being prescribed anti-depressants at the time of their suicides?
Anti-depressants (especially SSRI's) can sometimes mask the normal negative emotional feedback that would prevent someone from taking their own life... I believe it can make such a drastic decision easier for the victim. I'm not discounting the role of bullying... I'm just asking a question that I hope is being considered as these suicides keep happening.

(48,955 posts)in the name of "Christianity" to allow such bullying to continue. Apparently stifling hate speech based on one interpretation of Christianity, is worse than bullying youths to the point of suicide. Spiritually, I am a Christian based on Christ's teachings. I am not a literalist - and am appalled at the fundamentalists legislative push to codify such hate speech as to alleviate the blame in such tragic suicides.
I weep for this young man and for all those who have a gaping in hole in their life for the loss of him.

(1,326 posts)... I thought it was a Religious Right organization's reaction to the news. Only they would have been 100% serious, and meant it.

(100,071 posts)I hate bullies and bullying... I'm so glad I graduated in high school in the late 90's - at least then bullies knew their limits. With the advent of Facebook and Youtube it seems that bullying knows no boundaries anymore.

(163,986 posts)and never got a call back. Maybe time to call again. It's harder to connect here in San Jose than it was in SF but I know there must be something around here that needs to get done.
