General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI got the RSV vaccine today.
I am almost 74, a cancer survivor, a retired RN. Since I had a mastectomy, I can only have injections in one arm. I am planning on getting a flu shot and then the COVID booster when it is available. Made a plan with my doc on how to space the three vaccines out. I had a very mild case of COVID which I believe is because I had every vaccine available.
I believe in science. When people talk about having thoughts and prayers for surviving an illness, I know that thoughts and prayers comforted me during my cancer treatment, but science, medicine and education cured my cancer.
I just want to avoid getting sick if I can.
I asked the pharmacist if the RSV vaccine would also become yearly and he had no idea. If it is, I will get it with flu and COVID as I planned above.

(32,540 posts)I, too, plan to get all 3 vaccines and space them apart. Cancer survivor as well. Left arm for everything. RSV first. Had mild Covid last Christmas.
Your words make me feel good about my plans. If a retired nurse who believes in the science thinks this is the best plan, than so will I.

(6,968 posts)I had to have blood drawn last week for a doctor's appt. I praised the tech and told her what a good job she did. I am very protective of that arm.

(15,325 posts)At a local CVS. Free shot. Lots of appts available.
I'm waiting for the new covid brew, and will wait a month or two for a flu shot. Flu isn't really here yet in my area and I don't want the Vax to wane before the peak season arrives.
Also need to get the pneumonia shot.
Regular pin cushion I am.

(28,137 posts)It did not hit me has hard as my prior Covid only vaccines had done. I did spend most the next day on the couch staring vacantly at the TV, but I was functional by late in the afternoon. Much faster than I was with prior shots.

(28,373 posts)I mean, I love being a nurse, can't imagine having spent my life any other way . . . but I am . . . well I'm tired. Even though I've never actually had it myself, Covid has burnt me to a crisp. 😱

(6,968 posts)We are so very grateful to have retired before COVID. Nothing we did was as hard as that.
friend that was a NP and went through the worst of Covid working in an oncology office. Never got Covid. She retired early last year and two or three weeks after retiring, she got Covid.

(28,873 posts)just got notice from CVS that they have a flu vaccine ready for me. I wouldn't mind getting more than one at one time.
ETA will get the flu and RSV tomorrow, COVID as soon as they let me!
i hope i'm wrong, but i feel like it's going to be brutal this year. not just COVID, all the shit.

(34,423 posts)My mother (double radical mastectomy + lymphedema) and I (partial mastectomy with 3 lymph nodes removed) are able to get shots in either arm - for us the restriction is solely to putting a tourniquette on the arm (so no blood draws, no blood pressure in the impacted arm). I'm not sure what my mother does now that both arms are involved (the mastectomy was done in stages), and her lymphedema is in remission. The restrictions were likely more severe (like no skin breaks) when she had lymphedema.

(34,423 posts)It may recover in time. My mother got lymphedema after the mastectomy following her first breast cancer. Over time, it subsided - so she doensn't have restrictions other than possibly no tourniquette on that arm. (And I suspect that restriction has gone, since now both arms are at risk.)

(22,374 posts)I plan on getting my flu shot early in October, to get maximum value from it during actual flu season. Of course I will get the new Covid vax
Somewhere in there I need to get the shingles vax.
I can't take the RSV or Pneumonia because I am in a clinical trial for those two vaccines.
Maybe I got the live injection and maybe I didn't; that is the way it goes with clinical trials. However if the vax is approved, and it turns out I got the placebo then I can have the approved vax if I wish.

(17,932 posts)I took the shingles and flu shot on the same time, and my lymph nodes blew up like the Michelin man and stayed that way for a month. RSV and booster on the way, thank goodness.

(12,198 posts)Im waiting on flu vax til theres an increase in cases in my region, per the advice of Dr. Michael Osterholm (CIDRAP, U. Minn.). Ill get the new COVID booster as soon as its available.
I did have gastro issues 36 hours after getting the RSV shot (diarrhea, vomiting, both briefly and then gone). Its possible that it was related to the vaccine, but it really felt more like food poisoning. And Ive gotten lots of vaccinations over the last several years shingles, flu multiple shots, all the COVID shots (Moderna), and anything else I can get into my arm (yes, I admit it, Im a vax junkie!! ).
Typically my reaction to all the recent vaccines has been fatigue, arm soreness, and sometimes a mild fever. The RSV shot gave me very mild fatigue, no arm soreness, and just a hint of fever. So maybe its just a different animal altogether, at least for my metabolism. Hard to know until I get another one next year.

(3,295 posts)I too am a cancer survivor from a cancerous kidney which they removed. Also, I am going to be 87 in October and have no apparent side effects other than a little sore at the injection site. I will get the new Covid shot as soon as it is available.

(3,295 posts)I am very fortunate in that I rarely have side effects from shots. Shingles shots were a little more sore or achy for a few days but no big deal thankfully.
