Is there too much sports "news?"

I DVR the news in the evening, and have noticed too many times, the first 6-7 minutes of Milwaukee news (WISN in Milwaukee) is devoted to sports.

Meanwhile actual news (such as a serial burglar) gets 2-3 minutes. At most.

And it's not better anywhere else.

Sports gets it's own segment of 4 minutes about 2/3 of the way through the newscast. Then weather and it's done.

rare if any of our local stations have sports news at five pm. They usually have sports at six and only get about three minutes. I think they get a little more at ten pm.

Think. Again.

...I think there's too much sports in general.

Getting outside and being active is a great thing, but glorifying and promoting mindless competition with no real purpose is a little sick.

1000 times Yes. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I try my best to tune it all out but that’s virtually impossible.

I’m supposed to care that some man (because it’s overwhelmingly about males) got traded from one sportsball team to another because…Why again?

Madison WI. They talk about sport during the news. They talk about sports during the Weather Then there is sports.
How about some week old human interest story in the meantime.

Around here it's WILL VIKINGS BEAT THE PANTHERS? They lead the league with seven fumbles lost this season and have turned the ball over on the goal line in each game. Last week, they went 1-for-4 in the red zone against the Chargers. They face a Panthers defense coordinated by Ejiro Evero, whom the Vikings tried to interview for their defensive coordinator job before he accepted an offer to join Frank Reich's staff in Carolina. If Kevin O'Connell's offense can keep the ball and score enough points on Evero's defense, a Panthers offense that's averaged just 4.65 net yards per pass attempt might struggle to keep up blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blahblah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

In other news, the government will shut down tonight putting millions out of work, climate change will make the earth uninhabitable, a serial killer has murdered 11 people since last Tuesday, a fire has destroyed most of downtown Minneapolis, and a new covid variant makes your dick fall off. WILL THE VIKINGS BEAT THE PANTHERS?

Seriously, toss the TV and use a news aggregator on the web.

I use DU and Hacker News (cuz I am a tech head) but you might consider DU and one or two others.

Some ideas are here. YMMV. This is not an endorsement. Other lists were pretty awful by comparison.

Or you might choose Fark.

In 7 minutes they "Get you up to date on the 7 top news stories of the day!" Well, one of their top news stories is always some obscure (to me) sports score or Pac 5 (?) Big 10 (?) screamer, read over the sounds of a cheering stadium.
Is U.S. sports really "World News?"
