(4,846 posts)But there is no way a democrat would be speaker with a republican majority. They would rather not have any speaker than a democrat as a speaker. It's not like they want to actually govern. They have no problem to keep voting for a speaker for the rest of the term.

(20,911 posts)He doesn't look like the type to give up power that falls to him. He can remain pro-temp until the next Congress. No rules against it.

(11,655 posts)Earlier it was reported here that the only business they could do was vote on a speaker until they had one. just like back at the beginning of the term.

(20,911 posts)He can act as speaker. However, members of his caucus have already spoken out against him simply retaining power. They maintain his main job will be to get the new speaker installed . . . So we will see.
