(CNN) -- In the digital age, war isn't contained to the ground.
The Israeli government on Sunday said it has been hit with more than 44 million cyberattacks since it began aerial strikes on Gaza last week. Anonymous, the hacker collective, claimed responsibility for taking down some sites and leaking passwords because of what it calls Israel's "barbaric, brutal and despicable treatment" of Palestinians.
"The war is being fought on three fronts," Carmela Avner, Israel's chief information officer, said on Sunday in a press release. "The first is physical, the second is the world of social networks and the third is cyberattacks.
"The attackers are attempting to harm the accessibility of Israel's government websites on an ongoing basis. When events like the current operation occur, this sector heats up and we see increased activity. Therefore, at this time, defending the governmental computer systems is of invaluable importance."
Social media takes on Gaza conflict Twitter as a weapon in Gaza
Israel and the military wing of Hamas have been criticized for using ready-to-share images on social media to spread spin about the conflict, which has claimed the lives of about 100 Palestinians and three Israelis since the back-and-forth violence began again Wednesday.

Planting an ad banner of dancing cocks or something like that on an Israeli owned kitchenware company's website is one thing.
Something like Stuxnet...
Well, let's just say there would be nothing to protect you from mossad at that point.
The Israelis take their national security seriously.

(373 posts)In most of the stories I read about anonymous, their "Hacking" seems to consist of vandalizing the superficial parts of web pages or overloading servers and crashing them. My point is, they strike me a less high speed, elite hackers, so much as actually being bored teenagers in guy fox masks.
I believe that if they were to actually threaten Israel with "Cyber War" (Not a meaningless term), Israel would oblige them with a conventional one.
The izzies don't play.

(23,548 posts)Israeli intelligence doesn't hold a candle to that of the US, Russia, or even Britain or France. And it is hardly as if the US agencies see the Israeli agencies as entirely friendly.

(23,272 posts)Its the same as them interfering with the election (if they did), its probably just not wise in the long run.
As we've seen with the Arab Spring "revolutions" which turned into Islamist misfires, backing one side over another doesn't necessarily mean you picked the "right" side in the long run.
I'd far prefer for Anonymous to target the global geopolitical players like the financial cabals (Carlyle Group etc), known entities that are destructive to democracy like Koch-backed corporations etc. I think meddling in regional affairs is the wrong move imho.
