Because unapologetically insane has narrowed his base to the point where even he understands the need to change his tune.
Stuff like this, for example.

Theres no mistaking the contempt a fair chunk of the Republican base has for him.
Stuff like this, for example:
I will not vote for Trump, explained Remsburg, whos in medical sales and was joined by his son, a former Iowa State offensive lineman.
The elder Remsburg said he was basically a Republican until Trump came along and is now hoping theres a path back.
Same with Bruce Norquist, who was a table over and retired as an Army lieutenant colonel at NorthCom and now works in computer security.
Trump is a fool, hes too divisive, said Norquist. (An Aberdeen, S.D., native, Norquist first came to Washington as an intern for Aberdeens own Tom Daschle.)

Anecdotal stuff, admittedly, and those pro-Haley Iowans could change their tune come November but Trump Fatigue is real. And we know from experience that his inner child will guide him to even lower depths whenever the next stress waves hit.
Not that Im kicking back, but I like where we stand.

(17,989 posts)A slim majority want someone else. I dont expect many to vote Biden in Nov. but if a significant number of them stay home in disgust thats just as good. Thats encouraging.

(14,864 posts)He can't run both a rational campaign and an irrational legal defense. He will choose his legal defense. He has a verdict coming in weeks that will drain up to $500M in damages and interest from the civil fraud award, and another that could cost him up to $100M in the first E. Jean Carrol defamation panalty trial.
Then he has the J6 case looming, and if that gets bumped, he has the stormy daniels criminal case to worry about.
The primary is a million miles away from all of that. It is largely on auto pilot and his base will carry him.
He won't be changing.

It's what he does.
They knew he was a snake when they let him onto their ballot.
