would be to form a third party, maybe call it the New Conservatives, and run their own candidate in November to siphon off votes from Trump.
They will not win the presidency, but they will prevent Trump from winning it. They OWE us this much after subjecting us to the nightmare that is Trump for the past eight years.
Even if they lose the next four presidencies, it would be the only way to salvage the remnants of the party formerly known as "Republican."

(2,044 posts)to appeal to Republican voters, which sucks, but that is their reality. If they dumped Trump AND supported Biden, it would be curtains for their political careers, unless they did the really courageous thing and became Democrats.

(2,044 posts)once we are thankfully rid of Trump, either by prison, by his losing the election, or by him finally kicking the bucket from old age or disease, these Trump endorsers will be secretly overjoyed that he is gone.

(3,078 posts)It just takes too much to put party infrastructure in place even to just get on the ballot in the states, let alone run a campaign with enough seriousness that you will even get 10% of Repugs to go elsewhere than current GOP/Trump. Granted it wouldn't take much to give Biden a near certain edge but agree with the other poster that better thing is to get folks to vote Biden although I am afraid "Never Biden" or "Never Dems" is probably a thing for many Repugs as well.

NEW YORK (AP) Americans for Prosperity, the political arm of the powerful Koch network, formally endorsed Nikki Haleys presidential campaign on Tuesday, promising to commit its nationwide coalition of activists and virtually unlimited funds to helping Haley defeat former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary contest.
AFP Action is proud to throw our full support behind Nikki Haley, who offers America the opportunity to turn the page on the current political era, to win the Republican primary and defeat Joe Biden next November, AFP president and CEO Emily Seidel wrote in a memo announcing the groups decision.

Unlike Trump's voting base, the wealthy donors are not stupid. They know all too well that Trump will most likely lose in the general election. Plus, they hate chaos and I'm sure they're almost as sick of Trump as we are.

(25,556 posts)There are more still around than many realize (the DU consensus is that there are zero, which is false), but there aren't enough to make an appreciable difference. Republican voters would still vote for the R. Many of them are generational voters who will vote for the R, regardless of the candidate. That's become more and more obvious in the age of Trump.
The problem with running a third-party is that it will also draw independents, particularly if the candidate is relatively moderate. Independents went Biden's way in 2020, and we need to do what we can to ensure they stick around.
Think. Again.
(9,205 posts)...if a person is both serious and patriotic, they would not be a republican.
In addition, "republicanism" itself, is, by it's very ideology, words, and actions, both entirely anti-patriotic and non-serious.
Maybe there were serious and patriotic republicans at one time in the past, but it is simply not a possibility today.

(25,556 posts)You think he's either non-serious or unpatriotic? Pretty hard to argue that position, in my opinion.
He could probably be a Democrat and may become one at some point, but he's not presently, so the point stands. There are more of them, but most of them have left national politics.

Think. Again.
(9,205 posts)...by remaining a registered republican, while knowing full well what the republican party is, says, does, and wants for our nation is an indication of being less than patriotic.

Time to leave this bit of delusion behind, it is never happening.
The Bought Partisanship era is dead.
The Republicans are a white nationalist crime syndicate and domestic terrorist organization not a political party. Getovait!!!
