NYT: He has a charming home, tomato garden, loves chocolate, gooseberry pie & naps

Some things never change at the NYT:

On 9/20/1939, NYT published an article about Hitler's charming home; tomato garden; love of chocolate, gooseberry pie & afternoon naps. This was 9 mos after Kristallnacht, 6 yrs after the Dachau Nazi concentration camp opened, 12 days before he invaded Poland & started WWII. pic.twitter.com/4aJotYivbk— 𝔅𝔬 𝔊𝔞𝔯𝔡𝔦𝔫𝔢𝔯 🌎 (@Bo_Gardiner) February 11, 2024

Shame, shame, gray lady!! You have rarely been so pathetic. Is this the one time in your long career of lapses when the abject apology will be as prominently posted as the offense?? I doubt it.

They say nature is red in tooth and claw, and so it is, but animals act according to their nature to survive.

We go WAY beyond that, and sometimes not in a good way.

... so they'll prostitute themselves to the most humiliating degree, rationalizing it with mealy-mouthed excuses. But in the dark of night, they'll writhe and groan with shame, and the ceiling at which they stare in the wee hours will offer no forgiveness. And those are the good ones. The sociopaths, destined to rise through the ranks because they're incapable of shame or remorse, sleep like babies. And write the same witless crap the next day, and the day after that.

After the revelations about the vast quantity of drugs, including fentanyl, used when Grump was in the White House, I have been wondering what drugs he takes to get him through his speeches. He is slurring more and more, which could be dementia or the effect of drugs he takes to give him the energy to perform.

19 days before the aricle quoted. The NYT did run this article, but it was on August 20, 1939. Maybe the author cited here is too old and confused It may seem like a trivial error - only a month off - but a lot happened in that time that completely changed the narrative, and to me repeating it makes me question whether anybody studies mid-century history any more.

I looked up the August 20, 1939 NYT and did not find anything close to what was stated. Above the fold were these two articles...

Based on the above, I have doubts about the accuracy of the book by Despina Stratigakos. Although perhaps I missed the article cited, I'm not willing to spend more time looking through every page,

it wasn't front page news - it may have been in the "lifestyle" equivalent section.

What bothers me even more is that Stratigakos is from SUNY at Buffalo. Buffalo and the surrounding area has a large population of Polish descent - I grew up in the section of Buffalo called Polonia, which was almost 100% ethnic Polish. There are likely plenty of people still alive who were directly affected by Hitler's invasion of Poland - and could have corrected her on the date, had she bothered to ask. But the university has largely been insulated from the issues of the city as a whole.

This thread reminded me of it:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zone_of_Interest_(film)

The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis. It was a co-production between the United Kingdom and Poland. It stars Christian Friedel as the German Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, who strives to build a dream life with his wife, Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), in a new home right next to the German Auschwitz concentration camp.[3]

Great post btw. I was trying to think of what it reminded me of..
