WASHINGTON Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) is taking hits from all sides in Californias increasingly contentious Senate race, facing an onslaught of TV advertising backed by wealthy donors who are seeking to ensure that she doesnt qualify for the top-two runoff election against front-runner Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) in next months primary.
On Monday, a super PAC funded by cryptocurrency billionaires unleashed a multimillion-dollar barrage of advertising against Porter, accusing the progressive congresswoman of accepting contributions from the pharmaceutical and banking industries she is known to regularly lambaste in Congress. The group, called Fairshake, criticized Porter and said she says one thing and does another.
Porter has made fighting the influence of dark money a central part of her pitch in Californias all-party jungle primary for Senate. Shes sworn off accepting donations from corporate political action committees, advocated for getting rid of earmarks, and proposed legislation banning government officials from owning financial stocks. Last week, Porter joined other Democratic lawmakers in expressing concerns to federal regulators about the effects of cryptocurrency mining on climate change, which may have provoked the industrys ire.
Californians arent fooled, Porter wrote Tuesday in response to the super PAC advertising. Shadowy crypto billionaires dont want a strong voice for consumers in the Senate. They fear people who call out corporate greed, so theyre spending millions on dishonest dark-money ads against me.

(16 posts)Schiff talks about defending American democracy against authoritarian threats while Porter rehashes Bernie's talking points. Schiff makes Porter seem small.

(10,131 posts)I don't think she does.
I'm not convinced that is fair.
Sounds like a smear.
I don't know for sure who should win.
I think she's wonderful.
She had a tough time hanging on to her seat.
I do not want her out of congress.

(12,488 posts)For multiple reasons, I'm supporting Porter.
I like Schiff... but I don't think we really need 2/2 MEN as California's US Senators.
And they're both younger... so it'd likely be those two dudes for 12+ years.
If Porter makes the "final two" she might make it close in the general depending on how the independents and Republicans vote.
Schiff is particularly hated by the GOP so Porter may benefit because she's not him.

(4,220 posts)Schiff has be on TV endlessly for weeks, hitting Garvey as the "he voted for Trump twice" guy... IMHO. this will actually help Garvey with the pugs, thus enabling Garvey to get second place in the primary.
Then Schiff will clean Garvey's clock in the general election in the fall....
IMHO Katie should have kept her seat and bid her time until....
