(2,729 posts)I saw Leave the World Behind and it's been gnawing at my small mind for weeks. And I'm a grown ass man who should be immune to such stuff.

I think that in times like this people are drawn to cautionary tales that seem plausible. But, I prefer pure escapism (romance, comedy, adventure, history, music).

(2,315 posts)Civil/World War. Solar flare knocking out electronics. A natural disaster or terriost attack at an uminaginable level. Things would fall apart quick for everyone. We'd all be third-world or worse (which ALREADY exists for millions in the world).
Until it happens, I'll blissfully try and get to sleep at night and not obsess about it.

(2,057 posts)If i remember correctly, 72hrs is the standard that most western governments figure they have for a good disaster response to be mounted before a total civil breakdown in the affected area. If by 72hrs they don't have food/water/medical in the area then it will be total anarchy.

(2,057 posts)I believe that's the main driving force, along with access to clean water. People worry more on food, but the lack of potable water will cause more problems quicker. Most people could survive a few weeks with little to no food. Not happily and not without resulting health issues, but they could live. Nearly everyone would be in really bad shape by day 3 of no hydration.
