Western Washington State is having a rare ice storm! Gov. declares state of emergency.

Gov. Chris Gregoire this morning declared a state of emergency due to the weather.

In a release, the governor's office said this would "ensure the delivery of valuable dairy products across Washington state" by waiving hours of service for drivers of trucks hauling milk shipments, enabling the activation of the Washington National Guard and freeing up state agencies "to take extraordinary steps to help local jurisdictions during the current winter storm."

I can tell you from personal experience that the roads are crap, covered over with a sheet of ice. I haven't seen ice like this since I've lived in Illinois back in Jan. 1990! Trees are snapping and over 200,000 are without electricty. The storm is extended two hours, predicted to end at 2:00pn pst.

Driving can be nearly impossible and even stepping outside is dangerous due to the hazards of slipping and falling. I grew up in an area with terrible ice storms. Losing electric service and not being able to drive or even walk anywhere is just awful. I hope you'll be OK. Ice storms are just awful.

edit: Please be careful driving to work. Does the nursing home have backup generators?
