The Common Cult

The Common Cult
November 20, 2012
By Bill Maher - http://www.real-time-with-bill-maher-blog.com/real-time-with-bill-maher-blog/2012/11/20/the-common-cult.html

Fox News, you win. You have spewed your fact-free bile so insistently and so repetitively that the hypnosis has worked. A significant percentage of your viewers have accepted your ravings as gospel and what you report is no longer just a diversion or entertainment. Your fan base has become a dangerous cult.

We really do have to look at the level of hate and paranoia that's been stirred up in people by a right wing propaganda machine that has not just mischaracterized, but demonized, this President of the United States. The Secret Service recently had to pay a visit to 22-year-old California resident Denise Helms who posted on Facebook, "Another 4 years of this nigger. Maybe he will get assassinated this term." Without even a smiley ....

Thanks to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Fox News and all the other anything-goes, whatever-it-takes hypnotists, our President has officially become dehumanized in the eyes of their cult followers, a thing to be dreaded and feared like the Plague or communism or Mel Gibson ......

But since the word, "reprogramming" has such negative, commie overtones, I suggest we use the term, "rebooting". That has such a sensible and soothing, capitalist sound.
Rebooting and updating one's software. Folk will embrace this concept while they recoil and are suspicious of deprogramming and re-education.
The rebooting could take place in a lively Computer Software Theme Park, "The Eternal Upgrade", rather than the dismal "FEMA camps" of re-education program fame.
People would flock to these "Parks" to experience an Upgrade, the fountain of youth. "Drag your old FORTRAN self in and leave a super-fast and interactive, windows 8". Joan Rivers could be the spokesperson, selling eternal upgrades to the tired, those infected with viruses, and other slow, outdated models of Americans.
If we want to convert the willfully ignorant, we must be present and heard, in their places of worship, at leisure events they frequent, and where they work. We must lead by example but provide such a tempting lure that few will be able to resist conversion.
"The new and improved self" is a message that sells well to the consuming public. Couple that message with the notion that a prodigal outcast, returning to the fold, is always loved best and people will line up for an "upgrade".

ps: Plus rebooting sounds sort of like what the above posters are suggesting. Great minds think alike.
