I can't remember the larger context, but Chris and Maurice were discussing affection for pets/animals for some reason. Chris asked Maurice if he had ever had a pet. Maurice: "No ... just hunting dogs." Chris: "But a hunting dog's not really a pet ... it's more like ..." Maurice: " an .... employee."
To some people, that's what hunting dogs are ... a business asset of sorts. And when that asset doesn't perform, you dump it.
So, she was just killing an employee. Nothing to object to there, at least for GOPers and the moneyed class who support them.
(Transcribed dialogue is accurate as my memory allows.)

(116,032 posts)you retrain them, transfer them to another department or tell them to get another job. You don't kill them unless your "business" is the Mafia.

workers' lives during the pandemic in pursuit of holy profits.

(16,185 posts)Even though she did this, why write it in a book. The funniest part is that not a single part of the book is being discussed but the story she wrote thats the worst part. Even the description of it was crazy. She stated she hated the dog. I understand that she probably couldnt give it away due to liability if the dog bit the new family. But still? Shooting it? Crazy.

(11,760 posts)He focused on the fact that when you are "rural" and you have animals, like on a ranch, you develop a close relationship with the local veterinarian, who if there are old animals, sick animals, etc... that need to be put down, will come out or send a technician out to humanely euthanize them for less than $40 dollars.
The point was that the shooting of the animals was a choice based on a weird Conservative fantasy world. He said a few times, "We aren't living in the 1850's where it was a two day ride on horseback to wherever". We have cell phones and cars and someone can come pick up the dog and take it to a shelter... Basically, she thought it would be cool to brag about this fantasy world she lives in where the "hard choice" involves shooting an animal that didn't need to be killed, and shooting other animals instead of living in the reality of the modern world where you don't have to be cruel. The cruelty is the point with Conservatives.

(25,832 posts)How many people nowadays shoot a dog for killing chickens? Plus, she's rich and can afford a vet.

(6,266 posts)There are no-kill shelters that would have taken the dog. Perhaps it's behavior would have changed for the better once it was out of her "care".
