Trump says he didn't testify in part because of his 'past' — telling WABC radio he was seemingly worried about information that could come out during cross-examination.

"[Judge Merchan] made rulings that makes it very difficult to testify. Anything I did, anything I did in the past, they can bring everything up, and you know what, I've had a great past — but anything."

The media isn't reporting on all the verbal stumbles & incoherent ramblings of this guy. It's alarming how cavalier they are about him to get ratings but I guess if NBC is paying you mid-six figures you say (or don't say) what they want.

Pretty much anything that comes out of his mouth is incoherent. I'm afraid that the media has just started to accept that as normal for Trump. Clearly there is a different standard for him than anyone else.

Enter: I've had a great past

Possible Interpretations:

1. I am a good person who has lived an upright life.
2. I have many wonderful experience of various kinds. I've tasted life's every flower, which they would besmirch with their evil word-twisting.
3. Listen buddy, I fucked everything that moved fuh a lot of years (haha guys amirite or what), and if I testify they'll have me siting on the edge of the bed in my satin robe again, gnaw mean?

There's more. I just picked the top three for relevance.

More crimes? Is that why you didn't take the stand?

Any normal person that says he's innocent, good and honorable - would want to clear his name and get all these cases behind them as soon as possible.

You delay tactics and lack of wanting to testify to clear your name - says to me that you have a lot to hide and you're guilty.

First, I'm not sure that non-material questions would be allowed.
Besides that, that'd how it works when one is a criminal defendant. Questions about character just might come up.

A "GREAT past" for....

Bankrupting your casinos
Cheating on your wives
Cheating on your taxes
Running a FRAUDULENT Charity and University
Sexually assaulting women
Lying about everything
Stiffing contractors for work done on your dumps

So keep telling your gullible cult that you had a "GREAT past"!

This is the reason Weinstein used to get his conviction thrown out - that he was bullied out of testifying out of fear he'd be asked about what a piece of shit he's been in the past.

In the trump case however, more than half of the past bad acts were precluded from being raised on cross with Trump had he elected to testify, and the DA decided to eliminate the Karen McDougal testimony likely for the same "past bad acts will prejudice the jury" reasons.

Because they can't speak from a place of self-awareness. They don't have a core being inside, so they have to rig up a simulacrum of one gleaned from bits and pieces 'borrowed' from what they see normal people getting good results from; however, they don't have any empathy to understand why those behaviours are welcome or acceptable. They just see 'what works,' and repeat it to get what they want.

This is why so many people find someone with glib charm unnerving, or, more often, unnerving after prolonged contact. At first they seem normal and engaging. But then the way they say things, and when, and where... It's...off, somehow, and winds up coming across as bizarre, false and manipulative.

Because it is.

Like expecting direct, truthful answers to any and all questions asked of the Tangerine Toddler.

That's the real problem with the judge: TSF can't believe the prosecutors and judge won't let him lie with impunity to protect his fee-fees and fragile ego. Why, it isn't to be borne! Insufferable conceit!

On Cross-examination, adversarial counsel is LIMITED TO the topics raised on Direct Examination.

Therefore, if Trump's attorneys didn't bring up his past personal life, the Prosecutors can't ask those questions on Cross.
