as saying he and his wife noted Sarah Palin's perceived similarity to the Stillson character. It's easy to find these kind of populist demagogues scattered across American history and even easier to see our citizenry's gullibility for them.

I wholeheartedly support the empowerment of every American regardless of how I feel about their acumen because I realize in doing so I am ultimately protecting my own civil liberties. That doesn't change how often I am disheartened by their tendencies, though, or how I marvel that such a lot has maintained the nation for this long.
