Justice Samuel Alito spoke candidly about the ideological battle between the left and the right discussing the difficulty of living peacefully with ideological opponents in the face of fundamental differences that cant be compromised. He endorsed what his interlocutor described as a necessary fight to return our country to a place of godliness. And Alito offered a blunt assessment of how Americas polarization will ultimately be resolved: One side or the other is going to win.
Alito made these remarks in conversation at the Supreme Court Historical Societys annual dinner on June 3, a function that is known to right-wing activists as an opportunity to buttonhole Supreme Court justices. His comments were recorded by Lauren Windsor, a liberal documentary filmmaker. Windsor attended the dinner as a dues-paying member of the society under her real name, along with a colleague. She asked questions of the justice as though she were a religious conservative.
The justices unguarded comments highlight the degree to which Alito makes little effort to present himself as a neutral umpire calling judicial balls and strikes, but rather as a partisan member of a hard-right judicial faction thats empowered to make life-altering decisions for every American.
The recording, which was provided exclusively to Rolling Stone, captures Windsor approaching Alito at the event and reminding him that they spoke at the same function the year before, when she asked him a question about political polarization. In the intervening year, she tells the justice, her views on the matter had changed. I dont know that we can negotiate with the left in the way that needs to happen for the polarization to end, Windsor says. I think that its a matter of, like, winning.

(50,325 posts)Unfortunately, standard rules don't seem to apply to members of this Supreme Court. It is as if they are above everything like monarchs.
At a different time in history, Justice Alito would resign. We're living in an "anything goes" era apparently. I primarily blame Trump who proved to the world that people in power can do anything and not be held accountable.

I'm smelling shades of the Midnight Judges Act when Jefferson asked, 'ought the seditious and official attack on the principles of our constitution to go unpunished?' with bizarre consequences.

(14,293 posts)Alito is just as much a cafeteria Christian as most evangelicals, who are constantly picking, choosing or adding on to 'the Bible' to justify their own feelings and actions while casting stones/judgement at others for following dictates from the very same Bible they purport to defend.
Too proud by half. He's made God in his own image. And it's a rather small, petty God. Just saying, it seems very Blasphemous. Almost worth a lightning bolt from above.

(25 posts)Biden is against it, but it needs to be done before his next term ends.
Biden only says that in an election year. He'll not stop Congress from passing judiciary reform laws, and with pressure from his party, he will have talks with Schumer and Jeffries, and will go forward with nominees.
Biden says that in an election year. But if/when Dems win both Houses, and begin impeachment of Alito, Pres. Biden wouldn't think of stopping Congress from passing judiciary reform laws that would expand the Supreme Court, with or without successful removal of Alito. Were we successful in winning both Houses and expanding the SC, he would, with Schumer and Jeffries, likely go forward with nominees.
But we have to win the Senate. We have to.

Get them on the record. Maybe it will wake some people up enough to get off their butts and vote.
