One of the talking heads is saying rfkj should get protection because we don't need to see another Kennedy shot.

(19,382 posts)He definitely should get secret security detail. Doesnt have to be president Biden or trump amount but some protection wouldnt hurt.
ecstatic
(34,572 posts)and he needs to drop out! But at the same time, if something happens to him, everyone will be pointing a finger at President Biden. 🙄

No, there are laws on who gets protection and if he qualifies under those then he should and of not then he shouldn't.
He has plenty of money to hire private security if he wants it.

(12,011 posts)As someone else said, if something happens to him and he didn't have SS protection Biden will take the blame for it. Also, as silly as it sounds, his name/family alone makes him slightly more vulnerable because sometimes people do copycat shootings.

(3,115 posts)Whether the candidate has publicly announced his or her candidacy and has filed the appropriate documentation with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and is in compliance with the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended, and related laws;
Whether the candidate is actively campaigning on a national basis for the office for which his or her candidacy has been announced, as demonstrated by operating a national campaign apparatus, regularly appearing at public events in multiple states, producing and publishing campaign advertisements, and other similar indicia of a campaign;
A threat assessment conducted by the Secret Service of general or specific threats directed towards the candidate (for these purposes, threats should be defined as explicit threats of bodily harm to the candidate or indications of inappropriate behavior towards the candidate suggesting potential bodily harm);
Whether, during and within an active and competitive major party primary, the most recent average of established national polls, as reflected by the Real Clear Politics National Average or similar mechanism, the candidate is polling at 15% or more for 30 consecutive days;
Whether the candidate is the formal or de facto nominee of a major party for President or Vice President;
Whether the candidate is an independent or third-party candidate for President polling at 20% or more of the Real Clear Politics National Average for 30 consecutive days;
Whether the candidate is the Vice Presidential running mate of the above independent or third-party candidate.

(8,943 posts)One of the criteria, a threat assessment conducted by the secret service of general or specific threat. Clearly, there are threats. Some numb nut would like to be the person to kill the next Kennedy. Although I dont agree with him on about half his nonsense, his running for President has raised his profile and thus his exposure to harm.

(2,357 posts)1. His pedigree. Yes, it's unlikely, but the Kennedys seem to attract tragic endings.
2. One assassination attempt already. I'm honestly worried about copycats at this stage. Same goes for the rest of the candidates.
3. Goodwill. I don't see Kennedy attracting all that many votes from Biden, but with the announcement of Vance as Trump's VP, Trump has also basically made it clear he has no intention of moving to the left, and this is going to alienate a fair amount of soft Trump support him on the off-chance that he'll "reform".
4. Excuse to reassign Trump's SS detail. This one's a bit convoluted, but I can't help but think that it was awfully convenient that a 20 year old young man with no military training was able to elude crack SS guards, climb one of the only unguarded buildings with a line of site in the area (take a look at the fairground map), set up and shoot several shots - and that he was mysteriously killed before he could be captured. By beefing up security, Biden can also clear out those who might be more loyal to Trump than they should be.
