(9,558 posts)Joe Bidens decision to drop out and endorse Kamala Harris to succeed him on the Democratic ticket has Donald Trumps team scrambling.
Trump campaign officials acknowledged that Trump selected the inexperienced Vance, charged with all his techno-authoritarian ideas, to boost support among their own base, not extend a hand to swing voters, according to The Atlantic. Vance was a symbol of the Trump teams assuredness that they would win in 2024. Come Sunday, that assuredness appears to be shrinking.
Most striking thing I heard from Trump allies yesterday was the second-guessing of JD Vancea selection, they acknowledged, that was [born] of cockiness, meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter, Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who had written the piece about the panicking Trump campaign, posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Trump decried Bidens decision to drop out in a post on Truth Social, writing that his team would have to start all over again and asking to be reimbursed for the cost. At the same time, Vance has set straight to work, calling for Biden to resign from the presidency.

(3,666 posts)Oh man, Mikie must be getting a lot of hysterical screaming calls from Trump to DO SOMETHING to stop this DEM switch-a-roo that throws monkey wrenches in all his sure thing plans.
That and Trump posting they should be reimbursed for all the money they already spend on anti-biden merch. ROFL
He still doesn't grasp that life in politics is not the same as bullying and screwing over contractors.
The man just ain't right in the head. But we all knew that a long LONG time ago.
Re Vance on the GOP ticket: I sorta figure Theil and others were planning for Trump to be elected, then leave office, one way or another, so their bought boy becomes POTUS. Vance, being young, would be a useful puppet for years, maybe decades if those pigs get their way destroying the government as we know it.

(55,334 posts)They're reporting (so far) that some Republicans in general are having "buyer's remorse" over Vance's nomination.
Maybe that'll change later in the broadcast and someone will say Trump is thinking that way. But Trump himself changing his mind, or even questioning his own judgement, on any decision seems pretty off-brand to me.

Sorry, they have to carry him to term': Mockery after expert jokes Vance may get yanked
Daniel Hampton
July 22, 2024 10:59PM ET
The internet on Monday mocked former President Donald Trump's running mate amid news that Kamala Harris is now on the Democratic side of the ballot, with a Republican strategist posting on social media that Vance is "about to get the call to do the right thing."
snip
On Monday night, Mike Madrid, co-founder of The Lincoln Project, stirred the pot by suggesting Vance much like Biden will also get the "call to do the right thing."
"nope, sorry, they have to carry him to term," replied @goldengateblond to Madrid, including a dig at Vance's abortion stance.
"Abusive couples have to stay together!" chided @CAMadScientist, a dig at Vance's remarks that women ought to remain married even if theyre being abused.

(2,678 posts)"As the incumbent stands down, the partys recent moves are being reassessed and recontextualized. Tim Alberta wrote for The Atlantic:
[Top officials on the Republican campaign team] know that from the moment they partnered with Trump, everything they intended for this campaignthe messaging, the advertising, the microtargeting, the ground game, the mail pieces, the digital engagement, the social-media maneuverswas designed to defeat Joe Biden. Even the selection of Ohios Senator J. D. Vance as Trumps running mate, campaign officials acknowledged, was something of a luxury meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter.
That luxury is now gone. Alberta added via social media, [The] most striking thing I heard from Trump allies yesterday was the second-guessing of JD Vancea selection, they acknowledged, that was borne of cockiness, meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout.
