After all, he absolutely exemplifies and embodies everything they've stood for, for the last 80 years.

(7,162 posts)Yeah, I can get stuff out of Bible, Torah, Koran, even the obviously plagiarized Book of Mormon, and it can be good advice and applied to my life.
But I can also do that with any good self-help book. Actually, BETTER with the self-help book.
And the self-help book won't necessarily require me to hate any particular groups of people.

(7,162 posts)Having been both Catholic and Mormon in my lifetime, I have pretty much always borne the brunt of the fundies' hatred. Especially now that I'm agnostic.

(51,907 posts)--but you can never take the Catholic school out of the kid. Instead of giving up candy for Lent, now I give up fast food hamburger to save the rainforests. When a leader of Catholics for Choice was threatened with excommunication, she said something like "the Pope can't tell me I'm not Catholic any more than he can tell me I'm not Italian." Protestant upbringing of whatever form doesn't seem to leave the same sense of identification among those who no longer actively participate. I call myself spiritual but not religious these days.

(11,304 posts)me how many children I should have. I think a majority of catholics women are on birth control of some type believe the same way. Just think if Santorum wins be prepared to lose birth control of any time. But your right being born a catholic is like a jew being born a jew. Protestants don't take communion as serious as catholics do. To catholics when we receive communion to us it is the body and blood of christ. To others it's just a symbol.

(7,162 posts)Fortunately, she got fed-up with it years ago and we both left.
And mormonism is a LOT more like Catholicism than you think...

arbusto_baboso
(7,162 posts)Frankly, the only difference between a "cult" and a "church" is about 400 years.
You might wanna take those blinders off.

(11,304 posts)Nothing but hypocrites. I don't care what they think I know better. With Evangelicals ignorance is bliss. I have always known they hate catholics. I live in the south. I have worked in military chapels with all types of religions because my husband had to set up for their services. I would sometimes go over and listen to the bullshit they preach. Your not telling me something I didn't already know. You see it in the republican party. The bishops, cardinals and the pope are to stupid to see they are being used. The catholic church I grew up in does no longer preach to me. I stay home and say my prayers and my rosaries. I get more out of it then going to any organized church.

Romney is actually being revealed as the true type that benefits from that republican stand on economic issues.
you said it perfectly.

(7,968 posts)They are freaked out. I didn't know this until I talked to my dad who is a Southern "Christian" (at least he's a left Christian). He's freaked out about Romney and he's not even a Republican.
He says stuff like "Mormonism is a 4th Abrahamic Religion" and "Mormons are not Christian" and "I fear a Mormon in the Presidency".
I personally figure my dad is actually being somewhat irrational about this but I think that same level of irrational thinking is pretty strong in the South. I certainly agree with him that Mormonism is a scary sect - I also am an atheist so I don't really get too excited either way. To me almost all of them are religious nutcases.

(12,272 posts)Romney with his Mormon heritage is part of the wrong faction. Is saying Freemasonry going to get my post hidden? I believe it is only when it is mentioned as a part of a conspiracy theory that it is a ToS violation.

(1,067 posts)Most Democrats think all Republicans are idiots, but that is not the case.
They just believe in smaller government. However, smaller government doesn't mean
letting the big boys get away with anything they want.
They believe in a framework that is fair and equitable, that allows all people to succeed. They don't like
that the framework isn't fair and equitable and that some people & businesses are more fair than others.
Romney exemplifies the type of person who has the government help him & his friends. That's not fair and equitable.
It is NOT the social issues and such as many people believe. Yes, there are some hard core Republicans who only vote
on a single issue. But I know many who just don't trust him to do the right thing.
They didn't like Bush, and they don't like Romney. Also, they don't like Gingrich, Santorum, or Obama either because they all
help their friends instead of making things fair.
arbusto_baboso
(7,162 posts)Except that's the way it always works out, isn't it? ALWAYS. I defy you to find me any significant exception.
Ganja Ninja
(15,953 posts)That's not them at all.
The main driving force in their political lives is to piss off the Democrats and piss on people of color. Everything else is a distant second. The reason for that is basically two fold, racism & stupidity.
First off they wouldn't know economic fairness if it came up and bit them on the ass.
"Small Government" is nothing more than code for ending welfare because in their mind blacks are the only people on welfare.
And as far as not liking Bush, hell they were all for him until everything went into the crapper in 2008. Then they denied he was ever a conservative.
Don't like Romney, Gingrich or Santorum? They will gladly eat a pile of steaming shit if FOX News or Rush tells them it will ruin a Democrat's day.
Proud Public Servant
(2,097 posts)And one of them LOVES Romney. High-ranking elected officials, Wall Street types, serious pundits -- hell, even the occasional non-serious pundit (Anne Coulter, FFS) -- they all love Romney. They are The Establishment.
But this GOP can only win with the help of the Other GOP, the one Nixon brought into the party with his Southern strategy. That GOP is not realistic, serious, and sober, like the Establishment GOP imagines itself to be. That GOP demands ideological purity, rejection of all compromise, and violent self-destruction if need be. They hate Romney because Romney has no core beliefs, is all too willing to compromise, and knows is his heart of hearts that the GOP can fail and the world will keep turning. They are The Base.
I like gangster movies, so I use this analogy:
The Establishment is Don Corleone, maybe even Michael Corleone (ok, and often Fredo Corleone, too). But the Base? Tony Montana, all the way.

(3,575 posts)for the same reason people here 'hate' Skelton, Lincoln and Nelson: he does not represent the fringe view of the Republican Party so therefore he is not a "true" Republican.
