When I was out walking my dog last night, a neighbor who I previously thought was MAGA (mainly because he drives a ton of ridiculously large vehicles and belongs to an off-roading club that has that kind of clientele) just put out a Harris / Walz sign in their front yard. And this is in one of the reddest neighborhoods in all of Orange County (California). I think the number of people on my street who are voting for Harris, I could count on one hand, including myself. Never in a million years would I have expected that, but I really do hope that it's a sign of things to come.
I've definitely been seeing a lot less Trump garbage and a lot more Harris / Walz signs lately. Maybe it's a sign that people have finally had enough of Trump's blathering bullshit? Or maybe they're finally realizing the true dangers of what Project 2025 could entail and what losing American democracy would mean?
Think. Again.

(10,180 posts)Our problem is NOT beating Trump or the GOP...they have won ONE national popular vote in the 21st century (2004) and even THAT had some serious questions around it.
Our problem is the damn electoral college that insists land votes and people don't matter. Having that archaic ode to slavery and the 18th century STILL determining the future of a 21st century republic is tragic beyond all words. We risk losing the longest running secular republic in 2 millenia because of a few thousand mouth breathing imbeciles in red hats and more merch than teeth...

(16,331 posts)It was about the history of the electoral college. There are several states who passed legislation to use the winner of the popular vote. Maybe someday soon all 50 states will do the same. It seems that the majority of the people want to do away with the electoral college.

(10,180 posts)They win the GOP dominated states as a matter of course and then they are able to take nominally "purple" states - where despite overall vote totals that would suggest even or Democratic leaning contingents and convert them into Republican majorities - without ever winning a simply majority of the overall vote.
The office of the President SHOULD be the one office of pure popular vote determination. Congress and Senate make sense to be state level (but with independent and fair districts drawn up), but the President is the one government office that represents the total US population, so it is only right to have a system that reflects that instead of a rigged homage to slavery that does not!

(7,973 posts)Between the Republicans pretending they respect the constitution, and Democrats actually respecting the Constitution, I firmly believe we will never be able to get an amendment abolishing the College passed until this compact is in force, and has been for a few Presidential elections. I don't expect to live to see it - I'm 79 - but if we are to continue to be a democracy, even an imperfect one, an amendment must happen.

But that has also lost us some voters in previously solid blue states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and PA.
Plenty of urban folks have moved to places with lower cost of living, warmer climates, different job opportunities than the old rust belt type, and so on.

He's caused the housing situation to go crazy. A new law passed that requires structural updating of apartments and condos that are 30+ yrs old -- with the renters/owners footing bills that range between $20k and $60k. In some instances, the fees are due next month even though the law doesn't go into effect until first of 2025. Real estate listings in Gainesville have gone up 20% in just the past few months. People are bailing.

(20,394 posts)it has been turning blue, and Biden carried it easily last time. Everyone I know there is at least moderate. Hubby's family is from there, and our next door neighbors just moved there. They have a large Vietnamese population, and of course like everywhere in CA, a large Hispanic population. So overall, OC is not red in the traditional sense. Of course, every area has its maga contingent. We have some in deep blue Bay Area as well.

Last weekend I took a drive out to Westmoreland County (southeast of us but close by) and I did see a few random yard signs for Chump. Those were literally the first Chump signs I've seen this year. It's quite different now than 4 years ago. That's why I'm certain Pennsylvania will go for Harris/Walz and I'm hoping our Senator Bob Casey will also win another term.

Interesting that there are a lot of signs around you. Here in San Diego, at least in my neighborhood (65% blue) along the coast, I haven't seen a one for either Kamala or the former. I don't recall any four years ago either. There are/were some for local elections such as mayor/supervisor/city council and various propositions.
