Great Neck (NY) bans front yard clotheslines

Great Neck to residents: We don't want to see your underwear.

Clotheslines have been clotheslined in the Village of Great Neck, where trustees concerned about the sight of wet laundry hanging along village streets voted this week to ban the devices from front yards.

"We're embarrassed there is a need for this," Mayor Ralph Kreitzman said as he introduced the legislation at Tuesday night's board meeting, where it passed unanimously.

The new law prohibits clotheslines in front yards and closer than 10 feet to any property line, and carries a maximum $1,000 fine, 15 days in jail or both. Backyard clotheslines remain legal.

People should put up a clothesline where the sun shines. Or, for people who have little to no backyard--f those people. I'm baffled by people who are offended by underwear. It's not even a person wearing underwear. Just the underwear itself. What do they do in a clothing store? Avert their eyes and walk quickly to pass the lingerie aisle?

The average modest suburban house in Great Neck must be about $1.5M. Could only be somebody with a personal or political axe to grind.

NOT stolen??

Not in my city, lol. If it's within view and not bolted down, it's considered free for the taking. Heck, around here they'd steal the clothesline, too.

the backyard is better. In the front yard the clothes are more easily stolen.
The odor of sun dried clothes is so nice and line drying doesn't beat them up like dryers.
