what sad songs get you through?
I lost a friend tonight, one who’d battled addiction for a while. Last I checked they were ok, this came as sort of a shock. I wish I’d been more perceptive, and done more. Shit.
Listening to sad songs the one I’ve got on repeat now is Jesus etc by Wilco What sad songs get you through? I know I am not frequent poster but I like this place. Be kind to each other DU- our love is all we have Each one you is a setting sun, Peace , The bench scientist

75. Oh man...
One of the songs played live at my brother Pat's funeral service... Pat had been left a quadriplegic by a drunk driver when he was but 16 years of age... he lived 13 more years only. He was more than my brother, he was my confidant and my best friend, and I miss him as much to this day as to the day he passed. He left us 26 years ago this past December 6th, on my fathers birthday. I had the lyrics published on a memorial card gifted to all who loved him, and I tweaked the lyrics just a bit...
"Fly on fly home, fly home my friend, go on, go home... go home and walk again.." ![]() An eagle is engraved on his headstone with these same lyrics. I can't begin to tell you how touched I am that you too love this song, and the incomparable SRV. Thank you for posting this. |

This song makes me weep every single time.
It is so beautiful and there could be no better song to play at a funeral. I am so very sorry for your loss of your dear brother, Pat, and on your Dad's birthday too. It is a beautiful thing that this was played at his funeral and good that we are still alive to feel the pain that we feel with this song -and to remember. |

25. Thank you. If you have never heard this song by Loreena McKinnett
I think you will it find comforting at this time. It is one of the most beautiful songs written, I believe, after her fiancee was killed in a boating accident. The monks chorus in the beginning which opens up to the beautiful piano and of course her voice, is simply magnificent. I had it played for my fiancee when he too was killed, in a motor cycle accident. People at the service said it gave them goose bumps.
It is called 'Dante's Prayer'. I hope you like it. ![]() |

31. Or, A Row of Small Trees...(lyrics only)
By Garnet Rogers:
A Row Of Small Trees Her rings still held her warmth
As they fell to his hand The doctor said, "there's no more we could do" And he was worried at first that he did not understand But then he saw his fist close So he knew And we watched from the window As he walked slowly outside He seemed unsure as to which way to go And his coat whipped his legs As the traffic blew by He had one shoulder raised As though to ward off a blow And he lay in their bedroom Those first sleepless nights Too restless to sleep and too tired to cry And he'd wander downstairs In the pale morning light To stare at the horizon with unseeing eyes His neighbours worried about him Those first desperate weeks He seemed to dwindle and shrink in his clothes And in the evenings He'd wander the hills by himself To return as the morning sun rose The grass shook and swayed in the meadow As he stood in the night And he heard the dry whisper of leaves And the wind was her spirit Running free through the grass Whispering warm in his ear "don't you grieve" He was seen kneeling last Friday On a high windswept hill And his white hair blew back in the breeze And we thought he was praying Or had taken a fall But he was planting a row of small trees |

44. "For a Dancer"
Keep a fire burning in your eye Pay attention to the open sky You never know what will be coming down I don't remember losing track of you You were always dancing in and out of view I must have thought you'd always be around Always keeping things real by playing the clown Now you're nowhere to be found I don't know what happens when people die Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear That I can't sing I can't help listening And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round Crying as they ease you down 'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing Dancing our sorrow away (Right on dancing) No matter what fate chooses to play (There's nothing you can do about it anyway) Just do the steps that you've been shown By everyone you've ever known Until the dance becomes your very own No matter how close to yours Another's steps have grown In the end there is one dance you'll do alone Keep a fire for the human race Let your prayers go drifting into space You never know what will be coming down Perhaps a better world is drawing near And just as easily it could all disappear Along with whatever meaning you might have found Don't let the uncertainty turn you around (The world keeps turning around and around) Go on and make a joyful sound Into a dancer you have grown From a seed somebody else has thrown Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own And somewhere between the time you arrive And the time you go May lie a reason you were alive But you'll never know |

Bridge Over Troubled Waters (a song from our time together) was all I could think of. I quoted the passage "Sail on, silver girl, sail on by...oh, if you need a friend, I'm sailing right behind." at her memorial service.
But I see her grown kids and their kids and I realize that she goes on in them and it gives me comfort. |

46. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
![]() He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother. ~ By Donnie Hathaway The road is long, with many a winding turn. That leads us to who - knows where, who knows where. But I am strong enough, to carry him. He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother. So on we go, his welfare is my concern. No burden is he - to bear, we’ll get there. For I know - he will not, encumber me. He ain’t heavy, he my brother. If I’m laden at all, I’m laden with sadness, That everyone’s heart, is not filled with gladness, and love, for one another. I said its a long, I said its a long, hey, its a long hard road. From which there is no return, while we’re on our way - to bear, why not share? And the load - doesn’t weigh, doesn’t weigh me down at all. He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother, he’s my brother, yes he is. He ain’t heavy, he ain’t heavy, yeah. He’s my brother. |

these usually help me. that and shoegazer rock. but alas, just one artist for this post. Give yourself time to work up to the last one, his voice tends to steal your breath away. Also played a lot of Mountain Goats, particularly All Eternals Deck. Thoughts are with you. |

61. When I WANT to cry, when I need to cry
Bonnie Raitt's "Love has no pride" 's line "I'd give anything just to see you again" expressed my desire, my feeling so perfectly.
My late husband, a pain-pill addict committed suicide and I ache for everyone of us whose lives have been touched my addiction. I love this 'collection' of songs DUers have offered. Gold. Priceless. |

62. "Dock of the Bay" - Otis Redding.
Then:
“Long Black Limosine” sung by O. C. Smith on the “Hickory Holler’s Tramp” album which I have and just typed the lyrics up for this post. If you’ve never heard him sing, you must. Reading the lyrics doesn't begin to touch the mournfulness of this song. I read that Elvis did a great version, too. There’s a long line of mourners Honorable mentions: Kris Kristopherson, "Billy Dee" ("We just called it crucified when Billy he OD'ed" ![]() Maybelle Carter & the Carter Family, "Will the Roses Bloom in Heaven?" and "Hello, Central, Give Me Heaven (for I know My Mother's There)" bring goose bumps and memories of sitting in my grandmother's lap while she sang similar songs to me in her thin, reedy voice - so much like Mama Maybelle's. 68. Sorry to hear of your loss, but sad songs don't
"get me through." In fact, they make me more sad.
Maybe listen to something upbeat that you know your friend would have enjoyed dancing/listening to. |

69. Somewhere between the time you arrive and the time you go ....
For A Dancer - Jackson Browne. Found this great version this morning...
I can' help feeling stupid standing around,
Crying as they ease you down, Because I know you'd rather we were dancing, Dancing our sorrow away. Into a dancer you have grown,
From a seed somebody else has thrown. Go ahead, and throw some seeds of your own, And sometime between the time you arrive and the time you go, May live a reason you were alive - but you'll never know. |

72. Well..."I'm Gonna Be Strong", by Cyndi Lauper and Blue Angel
I guess it's just about the greatest vocal performance I've ever heard. And yeah, it makes me tear up every time. But there's something so unshakeably life-affirming to it, somehow.
Best to listen with your eyes closed. Video can only distract, and detract from it. &feature=player_detailpage |

73. Tom Waits "Waltzing Matilda" is a personal favorite
Also James McMurtry's "Painting By Numbers" and "I'm Not From Here" Arcade Fire "Rococo" and probably more appropriate to your loss Neal Young "The Needle and the Damage Done" |

74. "She Goes On" by Neil Finn/Crowded House
Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her Lying in the garden singing Right where she'll always be The door is always open This is the place that I loved her And these are the friends that she had Long may the mountain ring To the sound of her laughter And she goes on and on In her soft wind I will whisper In her warm sun I will glisten 'till we see her once again In a world without end [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/c/crowded+house/she+goes+on_20034443.html ] We owe it all to frank sinatra The song was playing a she walked into the room After the long weekend They were a lifetime together Appearing in the eyes of children In the clear blue mountain view The colouring in the sky And painting ladders to heaven And she goes on In her soft wind I will whisper In her warm sun I will glisten 'till we see her once again In a world without end In her soft wind I will whisper In her warm sun I will glisten And I always will remember In a world without end She goes on She goes on She goes on |
