Mr. President, help us.

Mr. President,

We voted for you in the last two elections. Now we need you to do something for us. Something few Presidents in recent history have dared - to stand up to the NRA and consider some real gun control in this country.

Your press secretary today, Jay Carney, said that "today is not the day" to debate gun control, but "that day will come". It's understandable if we don't do it today, but that conversation has to start tomorrow.

Some gun proponents are saying we shouldn't dive into a discussion quickly because details are not known. What details are we waiting for? Don't we have details from Columbine? Don't we have details from Tuscon? Don't we have details from Wisconsin? Don't we have details from Aurora? And all the other shootings the last few weeks? What is stopping us from having this discussion?

If you can't harness America's rage at today's events, then you aren't the leader I thought you were. You need to do it. WE need you to do it.

Some gun proponents are saying, well, what about all the people who die from drunk driving? That's far worse than guns. Yes, but the difference is that no one objects to laws to limit and minimize drunk driving. The NRA, however, is outraged at any whiff of restrictions on guns, even automatic weapons.

I grew up in hunting states. There is no need for an automatic weapon to kill deer. Indeed, there's no use for automatic weapons whatsoever, except to kill people. It's ironic that often the same people against abortion are for guns. Life, apparently, is precious only up until the point of birth. After that, not so much.

Some are asking, what about the drones that killed 160+ children? We need to stop that too, but the existence of another evil shouldn't prevent us from trying to stop this one.

Please. I beseech you as a fellow parent trying to leave my son a better place to grow up in.

Please, help us.

You, as a citizen can do as much if not more. If you have relatives or friends that own guns, have a calm discussion with them about how they can own guns, but the rest of us have protection from inappropriate use of guns.

The speech at the end where the President says he'll go door to door to convince people if he has to, to sell a gun control bill? That shouldn't just be a fictional story.
