Kansas Again - Sexual orientation anti-discrimination ordinance defeated

Kansas, a good place to be from as in gone!

http://www.hutchnews.com/Todaystop/Anti-discrimination

After a year of on-and-off, at times contentious debate, Hutchinson turned back a drive to give gays, lesbians and bisexuals protection from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.

With all precincts counted, unofficial results showed 13,893 votes had been cast with 58.4 percent against the proposed ordinance and 41.6 percent in favor.

Proponents had asked that Hutchinsonians “Vote Yes for Fairness,” while opponents wanted them to “Vote No” and “Protect Religious Liberty.”

Robert Noland of the Kansas Family Policy Council, one of two organizations that organized opposition to the ordinance, said he was sure that “when voters knew the nature of this ordinance they would not vote to adopt it.”

“The amendment in Hutchinson was soundly defeated because it imposed a narrow view on the liberty and freedom of Hutchinson residents,” Noland said. “We are glad that voters have spoken decisively. This is a very unpopular idea that has suffered defeat at state, federal and now local levels of government.”

even more repressive state laws based on religious freedom, the right to be a bigot based on ones religious feelings and rights, the right to discriminate, the right to refuse medical treatment, the right to kick people out of hospitals, to refuse visitations. It's endless. And they think people are going to flock to Kansas for jobs. Most people I know avoid Kansas like the plague.

The only thing that held that back was the democratic senate, now gone, and filled with teabaggers. This bill will surely come up again for even more discrimination, and this time it will pass. And LGBT is a criminal offense in Kansas despite what the federal law says, but fortunately overridden by federal law. They kept that one on the books too in a vote.

It's amazing that voters in three states passed marriage equality laws but simple job and housing protection laws in Kansas can go down to defeat by over 15 points. The bigotry in this state is sickening.
